There is a point at which the amount of wealth you have starts to distort or eliminate reality.
But it's like $300 million so not sure the commie teacher will like that answer.

Why should the good students work any harder when their good grades go to the frick ups? They'll still get a C no matter how much extra effort they put in. It's always easy spending other people's money.

So if an English teacher assigns Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens, teaches students how to make inferences in the text, and then assigns an essay asking them to understand the thematic elements of the novel, you don't believe class consciousness, wealth disparity, and social inequalities are going to come up?
Point out to me which book the question was about.

Wealth disparity in itself isn't necessarily a problem.
The specific manner in which the American middle class is shrinking into the bank accounts of a very few elite billionaires is a massive problem.
Every attempt is made to blame different races, different lifestyle values, different anything.
However that small town or suburban life everyone always waxes nostalgic over was first and foremost grounded on a very high percentage of those now idyllic places being people making middle class wages.
America has declined as the amount of people near the median income levels have declined. Small towns sucked dry by all the capital going to corporate chain shareholders in Manhattan and ever increasing amounts of lower class people in low wage jobs in decaying neighborhoods.

Think about what it means when so much wealth is concentrated in the hands of a few people. Do you think it is possible for a person to have too much money or wealth?
It's a legitimate question. The teacher's intro to get there is kind of bullshite, but we should all question just how much is enough.

I would have loved that! A gentlemen’s C was what I strove for.

Do you believe that has anything to do with manufacturing jobs leaving the country?

Yes! My favorite type of thread on TD, when baws from one of the poorest states in the union carry water for incredibly wealthy people.
It hasn't happened yet, but maybe this time Elon and them will read y'all white knighting and help you reach the promised land!

Phil Gramm-The Myth of American Inequality
I highly recommend this book by Phil Gramm and some other economists on flaws in the way the Census Bureau measures incomes and its impact on measures of inequality. Adjusting for those flaws, they conclude that income inequality in the U.S. is at a post-WW2 low. (ie, because of government transfers, income inequality has decreased, not increased).

It's actually a very good essay assignment that requires thought. I'm surprised they would even ask such a question.
Personally, I cannot deny people the right to make as much money as possible and do with it what they will, but I also find it disturbing and perverse for a CEO to make 2000X the average salary of his/her employees. Those same employees who do not get golden parachutes and $100M buyouts.
Because we are talking about the truly wealthy, right? The well off with a vacation home, a luxury car whose kids attend the best private school in the city are not part of this discussion.
I wish we as a society could reach a point where we all agree that everyone has a right to accrue as much as they can, but there should be societal (not legal) pressure against taking too much. The virtuous are the ones that can but don't.
I don't believe morality can ever be legislated but it should be society that encourages and condemns immoral behavior.
I guess I want everyone to be like the CEO of Arizona Ice Tea.

That’s a shut assignment.
But I would defend the answer as no. Then use the number of millionaires growing so quickly to point out that most of those became millionaires in very short order, most from modest beginnings. It is accessible to most everyone

I’d explore what is wealth and the motivation for it. Is wealth healthy? Plenty of research on that. In summary (psychology perspective), yes, but up to a point. Anything past that point is arguably not beneficial to psychological health and is even detrimental past that point. So, before concluding gap is bad, challenge the premise.
For disparity, would explore the why (root causes)
Inputs > Process > Outputs
Output is wealth disparity, so explore the primary inputs and processes that are driving it.
I’d exclude both extremes (mega wealthy and poorest of poor) and focus on the middle 68% (bell curve).
What is the wealth curve across these 68% and explore why?
What are the barriers and blocker?
What are the enablers?
Are the barriers/blockers and enablers efficiently distributed across socio economic starting points?
How do these show up as inputs and process?
The thesis questions are many. Can go on and on.
Approach:
Pros and cons of wealth
Compare and contrast two ends of 68% spectrum.
What are the primary enablers and barriers?
Starting line matters?
- Education
- Socio economic level
- Social - access to people who are wealthy
- Geographic
Etc
How I think about this. FWIW.

I had assignments like this all the time where you could choose whichever side you wanted. It informed critical thinking.
If the answer to the question based on your beliefs is “yes it’s a good thing” then write that way and defend it.
Nobody has to agree. You can have your viewpoint. That’s what this country is about.
A lot of you get offended over the mere idea that kids are exposed to ideals that are different from their families.
If your ideals are that virtuous the kid isn’t going to turn on his family. Do you not trust your kid to think critically?

Facts are facts.
Is America perfect?
No, but has more oprtunity than any other country, and approximately 1 in 10 of us is a millionaire.
Does anyone really think any other country has a better ratio?
Hell, we had an illegal immigrants selling Trump burgers a few days ago.

We have more millionaires than Australia and about 150 other countries have citizens.

More importantly, we are more generous than any other country.
US Aid was a $50B agency.
Now, how much of that was actual aid is anyone's guess.

Do you even know what it means to read literature? Or do you have particular books you think students should only be allowed to read?
It's a mindset of "everything I disagree with must be banished ". It leads to a dearth of critical thinking, and exposes who the real "snowflakes" are by watching people overreact over a teacher getting their students to exercise their critical thinking skills.
