Spend whatever you feel comfortable spending.

Find yourself a good local jeweler to work with.

Tip:

You could have 5 different 2ct stones next to each other and they might all look completely different depending on depth/cut, diameter across the stone, etc. If you want something that “looks” like 2ct, you’d probably be better off looking for a stone that measures 8ish millimeters in diameter regardless of the carat weight, rather than looking for a specific carat weight.

Laugh at people spending <5k on an engagement ring but they finance their wife's Tahoe for 84 months

I know someone who spent less than 3k on his wife’s engagement ring and was driving a new F-250 King Ranch with a ~1k note. It’s embarrassing

Buy a decent, practical ring and save the money. Revisit the idea of an expensive ring 10-15 years down the road if she turns out to be an actual keeper. ETA: This is a 100% serious answer. If she isn't okay with it, save yourself some time, money, and heartache by moving along now.

How do I purchase a ring in the next month with absolutely ZERO experience in the realm? Expecting great advice here. Make roughly $120k/yr, since I'm sure I'm about to be asked what my budget is.

Color and clarity matter more as you go up in carats. I would probably stick with a diamond that has decent specs and is ~1.5 carats, that should run you ~10k or so. IMO, it’s not worth it to double the price just to go up another half carat, unless you feel comfortable with that.

Stay away from any jewelry store you have heard of. Where do you live? There are custom jewelry places that source their own diamonds and will be way cheaper than the national chains. I was in Houston when I went through this, and there is a building on Richmond that is full of nothing but those jewelers. Definitely some characters in there. I suggest that you get them to set the one you pick in a solitaire, simple ring and offer to have her design her own. My wife loved that idea, and no chance I would have picked or created exactly what she wanted.

I was kinda high and a little bored, so I hit up fb marketplace for diamond rings in my area. I have found you one made for an infamous olympian, by a celebrity jeweler

natural vs synthetic no difference

can with microscopy

Microscopy cannot distinguish natural vs synthetic.

X ray crystallography can confirm the carbons are arranged in diamond cubic structure. Synthetic would be a textbook perfect example of such a crystal structure.

Synthetic are absolutely perfect.
That's how jewelers can tell difference.

I make similar as you just bought one in December with the band too. About 7k. Got a lab grown diamond, a natural diamond of that size would have been 15-16k so it looks really nice and not that expensive. Lab grown isn’t fake, it’s a real diamond with the same properties. Can’t tell a difference
