Unfortunately I believe this still leaves enough horn for them to be valuable.
However another positive side effect short term is the removal of horns works to lower their use against other rhinos in the wild, lessening injuries. But of course one could imagine that can create long term behavior changes in the species.

I think it was. From the San Diego Zoo or something.

No.. gays can have babies. At least in the US.

As a lover of all animals (except for pitbulls) this will sound crazy, but if we wanted to preserve these animals we should have made the sale of their horns legal.
It would have created a huge incentive for private ownership and breeding programs due to the profitability of their horns.

Why not tranq them and cut off the end of the horn.

That's what they're doing. They've had mixed results with various rhino species.
Use the market to create an incentive for people to want to protect and breed the animals.

There are plenty of other options if you are into looking at animals. The lovable hippo for instance. All the size of a rhino without the dangerous horn.
hard to tell

I don’t understand the inconsistency of conservationists. On the one hand they claim to beleive in the science of evolution. But on the other hand they try to stop evolution from doing its job.

From the World Wildlife Foundation:
You can't breed them because they can barely breed themselves.
quote:
The gestation period is approximately 16 months with a period of 2-3 years between calves.

do you consider poachers to be part of evolution?

They've been doing this... but it reduces the animal's ability to defend itself against natural predators. I did read a pretty cool article about how they're using the same type of dye that banks use for stolen money to tint the horns (and also elephant tusks) to hopefully make them undesirable to poachers.

If you follow the logic of evolution, namely that the most “fit” survive, then yes. Science teaches we are animals that evolve just as all other species evolve. If an animal can adapt to the current apex predator on the planet, which is currently us, then they can survive to pass on their genes. If an animal can not adapt to the human apex predator, then, according to evolution, that species must go extinct to make way for others who can adapt.
Like I said. Either we beleive in evolution or we don’t. Which is it?

One of the dumbest things I've ever read. The average gestation period of the African elephant is 22 months. Females produce calves at intervals of 2.5 - 9 years (usually about 5 years).
Can they also "barely breed themselves?"
I'm not suggesting they be held captive for breeding. What I'm suggesting is that private ownership (on large areas of land) would be incentivized through their being so valuable. This would promote increased natural breeding.

They should replace what they cut off with a prosthetic horn. Heck, make it bionic. Put a camera in it. There's all sorts of things they could do. Save the Rhino, learn about the species, make it shoot lasers much like drones and zap poachers from far away.
I'm mostly being sarcastic.

My understanding is this 'northern' white rhino species is basically a made up liberal species just to push their agenda. I'm not trying to be policital here, but this 'northern' species is not any different than the southern white rhino except for where they lived and evolved.
It's like saying the deer of Alabama are extinct and a different deer than Georgia deer. Yes they are technically different genetically, but really not.
Now poaching is not cool and this situation is still a problem, but I'm just saying we really aren't losing a ton here.
