That was already illegal under federal law.

A salary should be based off an applicant’s experience and skills for the job they would be doing. Their previous job salary shouldn’t impact the new job.
A person's past salaries are variables that can help determine the quality of a candidate.

Same here.
What they ask for is either a modest raise, or they hate their current job/current commute.

Who tells the truth anyway?

The last variable. You already interviewed them and know their qualifications, shitty pay at former job shouldn’t count against them.

This ends one of the many annoying steps on applying for a job online
I can understand asking the current role , which everyone lies about, but job experience 5+ years ago is just fishing for what other companies are paying lower tier employees

Not necessarily... Some companies have no clue what to pay for various roles, so they windup over/under paying. Which, if the case, could screw the candidate. If they were underpaid, and they’re asking for current market value, then the company might think they are asking for too big of a bump. If they were overpaid, then the candidate could be out of the running right off the bat because their previous salary was too high.
Therefore, the only numbers that matter are what the company can pay, and what that candidate needs to make sense for them.

This is a great reason to lie about your salaries.
Companies are constantly looking for ways to underpay their employees. Frankly, I think employees should be open with each other about their salaries. You'd be surprised at what your co-workers make.

If you are a business owner, you should know what your competitor is doing, even in terms of paying their employees.
Plus with Glassdoor and Indeed these days, information is easier to obtain for medium to larger size companies
So, what's the problem? If you can find this information out easily, this isn't really a big deal. It basically protects an employee who may have been underpaid. It doesn't hurt anyone except employers trying to get an employee on the cheap.
I'm not really sure the law is necessary either though.

The greatest trick ever pulled was making it taboo to talk about salaries

The loons in this state won't be happy until every single business gets the frick outta here.

In the finance and banking world, this bill is pointless. Salaries are pretty strongly segmented by business unit and title at virtually all institutions. I basically know everyone’s salary and they know mine.
I’m a Director in Leveraged Finance. I know what the VPs below me make and what the Managing Directors above me make. And gender makes zero difference.
I gotta think lots of industries are similar.

bullshite. When I’m looking for a new job right now. I expect to make significantly morethan my current job.
My skills and responsibility have drastically overtaken my pay. Why should my growth be penalized?

Of course, it's not the only variable.

I can see the rationale. It can lead to jealousy issues.

Good. What you made before should have no impact on your current negotiations.
Posted on 1/7/18 at 11:35 am to upgrayedd
This might affect overqualified applicants. For whatever reason, they want Job B. They have prestigious Job A currently that has a reputation for high pay. We see this quite often and the overqualified person’s application usually gets dumped immediately. no questions asked.
Part of that is there is a general assumption that Job A is highly paid position but that’s not necessarily true

Puleeeeeez. Negotiations are what they are. Why should a business owner be protected from overpaying a shitty worker who fell through the interviewing process?

Regulations such as these don't protect anyone, they restrict rights
next, they'll stop allowing background checks or reference checks

Ignore the sex part of this chart and look at the race.
I find data like this to be pretty fascinating. There are lots of variables, but Asian men/women are the only race that really grows and eventually outpaces white men/women as education increases. I know the gender pay gap is pretty easily explained, but I wonder how those explanations hold up in the race gaps.
