Electricians -- Circuit stopped working, breaker not tripped
Posted on 10/11/17 at 2:53 pm

It's the circuit that has two lights and the microwave. No issues for 9 years, haven't recently replaced anything on that circuit, including outlets/fixtures/bulbs. In the middle of heating something in the microwave this morning, the entire circuit lost power. Breaker wasn't thrown.
Still technically "at work" so I haven't had time to do anything besides leave the breaker off for a few minutes and turning it back on. Also checked the microwave outlet and a light switch with a noncontact voltage pen and got nothing.
Other ideas appreciated.

Is there an outlet on that circuit with a reset button?

Is it possible there is a gfci outlet on the same circuit?

Check all of your GFCI's in the kitchen.

CAREFULLY:
Kill the main going to your circuit breaker panel.
remove the hot and neutral legs of the circuit going to the outlets in question from your panel box and tie them together.
Then check continuity at all of your outlets. If it looks good, something is wrong on the "supply" side of the breaker. If it shows open, one of your wires has been cut somewhere between the panel and outlets.
*DISCLAIMER* I am not an electrician, if you electrocute yourself I will delete this post and disavow all knowledge
ETA: If you need clarification on any part of this, you shouldn't be doing it.

Have this same issue. Panel box was left open in the rain and a plug and light fixture on that breaker do not work and breaker is not tripped. I inspected the plug, junction box and light fixture and all connections are fine. I will be replacing the breaker tonight as the breaker in question is showing rust at the connection screw. If it corrects the issue, I will report back, either way.

Check all the outlets on the circuit. They may all be back stabbed and daisy chained and one of the wires may have worked its way out, is lose, or burnt through. Breaker off of course.
I always require mine to be pigtailed and the screws on the receptacle used for connections. Makes changing an outlet easier, and if you lose one outlet for the most part you don't lose the rest.

Do you have a multimeter? I have one and just enough electrical knowledge to kill us both and burn your house down if you're interested.

Bad advice!

The outlets mentioned are the only ones on the circuit. Breaker will not activate, trip or reset and no power at the fixture, plug and junction box, thus leading me to believe the breaker is bad. I did not have my voltmeter with me to test breaker, and for a few dollars I can just replace.

Yeah, I'm terrified of doing anything beyond changing outlets/switches and replacing light/fan fixtures.
When I'm off work I will check the microwave outlet. It's the only outlet on the circuit. The only other things on the circuit are a light above the washer and dryer, and the attic light.
It would be weird if a wire came loose from the microwave outlet. It doesn't get any use in terms of plugging and replugging.

Agreed. I did have an issue earlier in the year where I tripped the breaker for the stove. Looked and felt like it wasn't tripped but turning it off and back on a couple times got it working again.

I am thinking it may be the outlet. I just had a chance to check the attic light and it does work. Attic must be first in the circuit. After my next meeting, I can look at the laundry switch and microwave outlet wiring.

Back stabbed outlets are the devil.

Call an electrician before you kill yourself because you took the advice of some baw on Tigerdroppings.

If there is no gfci then I would change the breaker. If still not working pull out your check book and call an electrician.
