My friend did this when her dad died unexpectedly and they had a difficult time with the expenses. The funeral home made arrangements that people could send in payments to them. Once the funeral was paid for, they sent any excess money to the family.
The donations in the family member's name to the funeral home were posted with the obit and also on-line. It was all quite discreet.

Call local churches? What?
Churches, yes. Local news? Ask funeral homes themselves. Did their policy come with a plot? Maybe ask that cemetery?
And as mentioned, this does sound like something a gofundme was made for.
A church not stepping up would be pretty damned shitty.

If a gfm starts up, I'll chip in.
I am still racking my brain how to start one without sharing TMI like they are asking. I don't want it to look like a scam or anything.
Maybe have people from here email me for verification information before donating? Not sure and am open to suggestions.

Takes a pretty crappy person to rip off your own grandparents .

Be careful that there are not tax implications for you with regards to the GFM account.

Update:
The family does wish to do a GFM but are asking to still remain anonymous against my advice. I know how this looks on the surface but I assure all of you that it's sincere. I have been on TD for 11 years and despite being a jerk sometimes, I have never tried to take advantage of anyone here.
Donate if you wish

Not bad at all. I am going to chip in as much as I can as well.

After seeing the results from one hour on here, the family asked me to update the GFM to include his information and to remove the information about the sister. They do not want drama at this time but thank you for all of y'alls support.

I don't have FB or any other social media, but I'll try to get my wife and others to share it later when I get home
