Education Scam of the Day: Credit Recovery

My post about what people were wearing to graduation last weekend, followed by the scholars of Madison Prep making a fool of themselves got me talking to some people in K-12 education.

Madison Prep has a 95% graduation rate, and only 35% of their students can read at a middle school level. How is this happening?

The scam is called Credit Recovery, and here is how it works.

Our young scholar fails a class outright, or doesn't attend enough classes to have a shot a passing. Because there is a 50 floor grade, every 0 is counted as a 50, making passing with a 65 much easier. But still some of our scholars can't pull this off. Enter Credit Recovery.

For a few as three mornings of summer vacation, you can go in and recover the credits you miss. Sometimes it only takes you showing up one day. Do you do the work? Nah, you can sleep for four hours in the cafeteria. Just show up. They have to take an online class with unlimited attempts where proctors just give them the answers, or they get a parent or friend to do it. One aspiring entrepreneur is selling his services online. You can get 26 credits in a week!

Its a nationwide problem.
