Ned to repeal/adjust homestead exemption to bring more payees into the game.
Those that pay zero vote for taxes all the time. Representation without taxation.

the problem is gov growth, but I agree spread the base. Yet nearly every election there’s a new carve-out or tax freeze/exemption for some type of gov employee: firemen, cops, homeless teachers, etc. It’s the self-licking ice cream cone.

Gotta make up those St George losses somewhere. And I’m just assuming St George is in EBR. Don’t really know

Property taxes will not fund the City of SG.
You can go online and look at the EBR Assessor’s website and they show the various millages you pay depending on where you live in the parish. Not every one pays the same.

Why do people who live in rentals have the right to vote on property tax issues?

Voting today is not what our Founding Fathers imagined…too many folks with no skin in the game.

That's the assessed value of your property, right, not the increase in actual taxes?

If so, your taxes will be based on 10% of that increase, or $4,600. So if you live within the Baton Rouge city limits your property taxes will increase approximately $55 based on 117 mills of city, EBR Parish & EBR Parish School System property taxes.

A sq ft is a sq ft, it doesn't matter what neighborhood it is located.
So a 2,500 sq. ft house in the Country Club of Louisiana should be assessed at the same sq. ft. value as a 2,500 sq. ft. house in Scotlandville?

the home around me that have more square footage haven't been selling for what mine was assessed at.
You can go to the website linked below for the EBR assessor and look up what your neighbors' property assessments are.

LINK

If you don't know their street address, click on "View Your Assessment" button in the middle of the homepage and then click on "View Map" on the left hand side of the resulting page. Find your street on the map and then click on any house on your street, including yours, and a window will open showing the assessed value of the property along with the 2024 taxes due.

You forgot a 0. It’s an increase of about $550.

The new amount owed on your property is posted here (I checked yesterday): Assessor

The amount you paid last year is still posted on the EBR Sheriff site (click through like you are going to pay your tax): EBR Sheriff

Our Assessor has done a great job of providing information about who pays what. Their map is current and they provide a ton of information.

Completely different tax structure. One is explicitly laid out to defer taxes. In fact by doing so the government may end up collecting more in certain situations. My point is if everything is going up, including the cost to purchase the services in the municipality, then it should all be proportionate. The EBR resident should have a bigger issue that they piss away the tax revenue inefficiently than the couple bucks his taxes will increase.

principles the same, they’re taxing me on some phantom unrealized value of which I may never get the benefit. Also, higher taxes destroy any real increase in fmv I may recognize at sale. Problem is most citizens are ok with gov growth and spending so long as they get some benefit, even “conservatives”.

In my area of EBR my property taxes go mostly to schools, SG Fire, BREC and the Libraries. It also goes to the Parish Gen. Fund, MARC (Mosquitto and rodent control), COA and the new mental health, EMS, assessor, and law enforcement.

There is a lot of things to “watch”, plus in my opinion there’s an imbalance. Some entities have more than they need, and other things get shortchanged.

You know you can dispute the assessment. Especially If surrounding and similar properties haven’t gone up as much or at all.
