No I just checked my fees under the account tab and there is clearly a final shipping fee and final value fee. Separate from each other.
OK, you're right, but AFAIK, both fees are always 10%, and they separate them just for bookkeeping purposes.

Facebook marketplace is by far the fastest way to sell something nowadays.
It's the only reason I still have a Facebook app. I had deleted it years ago.

eBay also charges a shipping fee if you charge shipping to the bidder. Why would they do this? They don't control what the post office charges. They make a fee for a lister charging shipping. How ridiculous
I sell about $150k a year on eBay. They started the shipping fee several years back when sellers were exploiting eBay's fee structure. A seller would avoid the 10% sell fee by listing the item for 1 cent and charge the product price as shipping. So, they'd only pay 10% of 1 cent.
I sell on Amazon, eBay and my own website. I pay well over $30k a year in fees. Shipping is well over $50k in costs. Hard to make money between all the fees, but it's part of the process.

If you don't mind me asking, what do you sell? Always looking to support local guys.

Same. No one posts on craigslist anymore. The FB app is just too easy to use.

I always try to develop a rapport with people before I use PayPal. If you can trust them, you can send/receive the funds as "friends/family" and bypass all the fees.

Retro, swing, gothic, pin up, rockabilly, rock and roll and classic car clothing and accessories....mens and women. I sell whatever the market will buy. I sponsor the Dallas Burlesque Festival. One of the benefits of selling this type of clothing is the amount of hot women I get to meet.

It's hit or miss on both. I usually check both if I'm looking for something specific. The only problem I have with Facebook, is the descriptions tend to be minimum, and they have fewer pictures. But they may be because you have more idiots using it.

This has to be illegal - right?

I see where you are going but no it isn't, it is simply a contractual agreement on the sellers part. If you print your labels online or through eBay you get a discount with USPS that is almost always more than the eBay fees.
There is also a big push by eBay to get you to offer free shipping as it is proven to produce more sales but it is a two edged sword, you win if someone buys multiple items and lose if they return something even if not defective or SNAD since there is no way to recoup your initial shipping to them.
eBay has continually pushed to become more of a corporate level (and Chinese) shopping portal and makes it tougher and tougher for the few item seller. Chinese shipping always kills me (govt subsidized) I bought some o-rings from China and the o-ring set AND shipping were cheaper than just the shipping to someone at the end of my street. I paid $2.49 for them shipped and not counting the envelope it would have cost me $2.61 to ship them even with a USPS discount.

Ebay is the cortana mall of merchandise websites. I quit selling on there years ago, and never check it when I'm looking to buy something.
