The Army taught my buddy a working knowledge of German in three weeks from a standing start after he graduated the Q course. They took an aptitude test. The ones who scored high got a hard one like Urdu or Mandarin. The ones with low aptitude got German. They had enough native speakers of the Latin languages that they didnt need to teach it.
