In an episode of Duck Camp Dinners on YouTube, they talked about how eagles will hear them shooting and come try to steal a downed duck. Got one on video hanging out by the blind, but I don’t think he stole a duck that day.

I saw an eagle grab a duck right off the water, climb above the tree line and drop it. At first I thought it was a juvenile, because it looked rather small in comparison to him.
Then I saw a pretty big splash, so of course I went over to investigate.
Nope. Was a full grown duck, clearly dead now just floating there. Looked up and there was this big bald eagle just staring back at me. He was perched on a tree, probably 30 feet away but was still an impressive sight.
Amazing birds.

When Salmon fishing out of a floating Lodge along the west coast bush in Canada, we were under constant surveillance by hawks / eagles / etc. If we reeled in a rockfish, they would start circling. Sometimes we had to whistle and hold up the fish for them to see.
We would knock the fish in the head with our club and throw them up as high as we could, with a few caught in the air like in the video, but most swooped off the top of the water
Almost as much fun as hooking a salmon!

I went fishing last week and an eagle flew overhead and then dipped down and caught a fish. It was so cool to see.
He was the only successful fisherman that day.

I had one grab a crippled rabbit right in front of me. I had shot it in the leg while I was bushogging. We both damn near grabbed it at the same time.
Have had them come eat catfish carcasses while I was cleaning fish. They would pull them out of the canal.
They have eyes like eagles.

I didn’t know they had Hardheads in Australia.

I have multiple hawks patrol the fields when I brush hog. They wait for all the displaced rats, rabbits and snakes. The crows stay in the fresh cut behind me to pick off bugs. Never fails, they always show up.
One winter I had a bald eagle sitting in a dead tree directly between two ponds. I watched it snag a 3 pound bass and drop it back in th water. The following summer I caught the bass and it had a huge scar right in front of its dorsal fin. I had to cut out that portion of the filet due to the scar tissue. Looked like the eagle lost it due to the flesh ripping due to the weight of the bass.

About 45 years ago I read an article in the Times Picayune. It was about an Iranian couple who were picnicking in the mountains in Iran when an eagle swooped down and carried away their sleeping baby. That story has stayed with me all these years, and I’m always careful of that - first with my kids and now with my grandkids.
