There are bad drivers out there, they don't have to be drinking.

The retard who caused the wreck that night had a BAC of 0.4. Thankfully he got what he deserved and died on impact after crashing into a light pole. But he took down 2 of my friends and 2 passengers in his car with him. Also sent a 3rd friend of mine to the hospital for a couple of weeks.
Watching a friend get launched a good 40 feet out of a truck and face first into the pavement will change your mind about it all. It wasn't even the death and gore and blood and twisted metal that really left an impact on me, it was the smell. That's what still haunts me. I got lucky. It could have been me. Idiot ran a red light at 60mph on a 35mph street. My friends truck in front of me was the one smashed. I got a front row seat to it all.

Drunk driving should be a slap on the wrist. After a few I guess the penalty could get more serious.

Point of order, I am a cop (for now).
The amount of booze it takes me to get to .08 is nuts. However, once I'm there the amount it takes me to get to .16 is negligible. Yes, I use issued equipment in my studies.
However, if Waze was not updating these checkpoints I would be very interested as I am not only a snitch Wazer, but a map editor that would offer suggestions to the Waze staff. For the record, I want the checkpoints and cop alerts on the map to make even the most fricked up Wazer think to take Uber, Lift, a cab, or ride a fat bitch home. Just don't drink and drive.
Point of order, I'm at a .12 right now.

.41 is my all time high. Scary part...I thought he was below .08. Needless to say a professional drunk. Passed some of the field sobriety. If he was sober he probably couldn't walk without shaking.

just curious....do those breathalyzers read high BAC if you catch someone right after they finished having a few back to back drinks compared to if they had blown a few minutes later. For instance, if I had a few drinks, then took a shot of vodka and blew into breathlyzer right after compared to taking breathalyzer 15-20 minutes later after same # of drinks?

In AL, there is a required 20 minute deprivation period....for the Drager (court admissible breath test).
Having said that, when I encounter intoxicated drivers...
I ask questions. How many drinks have you had tonight? Over how long of a period? (I'm the type of cop you should be honest with and I will admit I am not the run of the mill)
We run through FSTs (field sobriety tests). If you pass...I TELL YOU THAT YOU PASSED. However, I ask you to blow so I have documented evidence of my experience with less than legally intoxicated operators on video for me to compare with border line operators that did not pass. (Defense attorneys have learned to hate me for this because I bring other footage of less intoxicated operators to their client's trial for comparison). If you blow over .08 after I say you passed...I let you call a ride. NO harm no foul. Know your limits. If you fail, go to trial and face me...the jury sees a very reaonable, fair and objective officer saying, DAMN SON, YOU DRUNK.
Here is my issue with DUI. It is very subjective. I hate subjective and love objective evidence as an officer and a future attorney.
Now, how many officers do you think are as:
1. Objective as I am
2. Reasonable as I am
3. Articulate as I am
4. Prepared for trial as I am?
Once I am on the defense side...see 1 - 4 and let that be the baseline your defense attorney is operating from with the case law on his side....I accept credit cards.
