Dutch Safety Board releases video report on flight MH17

The cube- and bowtie-shaped shrapnel combination is only found in a ground-launched Buk, and not in any air-to-air missile
The location of the explosion was determined by both the shrapnel spread pattern, as well as by examining data on the cockpit voice recorder. By comparing the fraction of a second difference in which each of the four cockpit microphones picked up the explosion in the last milliseconds of the flight, it could be determined where the explosion was located. It was approximately one meter up and to the left of the cockpit.

I saw this online and a lot of the comments were asking why a plane would fly over a war zone, but planes are over war zones all the time.

Do commercial airliners have some kind of SAM lock warning?
If not I can't imagine what was running through the cockpit crew's heads the second that missile came into view

Fairly certain they died immediately. Apparently the passengers behind 1st class were alive for roughly 7 minutes before becoming unconscious.

The report I saw (which was discussing the slant the Russians are putting on the official report) went to great lengths to say that everyone was either killed outright or rendered incapacitated and unconscious within seconds. Not arguing the point but saying that the Russians are really hanging their hat on "no one suffered" which I found odd. And rather morbid.

The passengers experienced instant cabin depressurization, rapid deceleration, temperatures around -35 F, and had no breathable air at that altitude. I hope and pray that they didn't have to suffer through 7 minutes of horror.

IIRC the Challenger investigation determined that at least one of the astronauts was conscious and attempting to implement emergency procedures during the descent.

Yup, I basically flew this route in August 2013 on the way to India. Even after that area we flew over Afghanistan and Pakistan, etc.
