I'm in San Diego getting some yogart. My total was $5.84. I handed him a $20 and he opened the drawer instead of letting the register tell him the amount to return. He stood there, eyes staring into space, he couldn't figure it out, and finally I said, "You owe me $14.16."

"Oh, okay." So he counts to himself and then hands me two $20 bills, four $1 bills and sixteen cents.

Now I'm sitting here, eating my yogart, thinking to myself, Profit? or return to the counter and tell him how stupid he is and to give me a $10 bill in exchange for the two $20's he gave me.

Give him the money and get correct change. You don't want karma coming back for that cash.

You already walked away without saying something. Don't go back now.

You're calling him a dumbass but you had to come here to ask whether you should be a thief or not? Better to be stupid than a petty thief.

I definitely give the money back and explain to him your wisdom comes from years of service industry experience.
I was just just like he's learning and you should pay attention so they don't dock his paycheck.

OP is a dick.

Yeah, I struggle with that decision. May have profound negatives effects rippling through my life for years.

Tip him $20 and keep the rest. Everyone wins. Until he gets fired.

Use it as a tip for the next server you get if you didn't return it.

Show him on your phone calculator how the simple math from your transaction works. Make him show you his GF's naked pics in his phone to get the money back.

High five him, pay the money, then leave.

Return the money later when the owner/manager is there so that you can tell him how dumb his worker is.

That kid might need that money. He may not be qualified to get another job. Not everybody is good at math lol. Return the damn money so it doesn't come out of his pocket at the end of the day. 30 bucks is probably a lot of money to him.

It's likely all or more than he will earn all day.

Usually, when you're calling someone else out for being a dumbass, you should do a better job of spelling.
