A fish oil-derived medication may lessen the likelihood of a heart attack or stroke in patients who are at high risk despite taking statin therapy, a new study finds.

The medication, which contains high doses of the omega-3 fatty acid EPA, cut the risk of death due to cardiovascular causes, heart attack and stroke by 25 percent, the researchers found. And that was on top of the risk reduction brought about by cholesterol-lowering statins, according to the study, published Saturday in the New England Journal of Medicine.

After they make their billion, it will be $5 with your prescription card at Wal-Greens - in about 12 years or so.

If only people were not so fricking lazy.

They could get the same benefits from proper nutrition and exercise for a fraction of the cost.

Nope. Gotta go see the doc, fill that new scrip.

Couldn’t you just take fish oil for a few bucks a month instead?

Edit: just seen other thread that says study doesn’t show fish oil helps so you’re screwed either way?

Do you ever wonder why your premiums are so high?

Or just take fish oil or get it from salmon? Much cheaper than this drug with same effects.

This study saying fish oil cuts these risks is probably based on the fact that adding fats to your diet cuts those risks. Ketosis, a high fat diet, cuts those risks...

Yeah. That's the point of the thread.

I’m on this once a day — I get 90 pills for $60 via a coupon from the docs office.

I’m not fat nor am I lazy. A very strong family history and blockage already. Also it’s not the same as otc fish oil —- it was explained o me. It I’m terrible at remembering these things.

I believe that my premiums are so high because of the American Health Care Act that allows people with PRE-EXISTING conditions to purchase insurance.

I wish car insurance was like that.

Also, I think the Pharmaceutical lobby is very strong and has too many politicians in their pocket. There is no reason that the same medication in Europe or wherever is 10% of the retail price for the same medication sold in USA. WE ARE CLEARLY BEING RAPED.

ETA: Not to point the dirty end of the stick at just Obama, I think even Trumps compromise plan allows for pre-existing conditions.

Eat a ton of salmon and ahi tuna every week. It's a staple of my diet.

Yes it's different from OTC. Far higher quality.

How do you explain the absurdly high costs prior to enactment of the ACA?

Prescription drugs make up around 15% of health care expenditures. Decimate the industry and rate of research by cutting drug prices (say) in half, and you make only a small dent in overall costs. "Big pharma" is everyone's boogeyman, truly the opium of the people.

You might consider looking at the entities and practices taking the lion's share of the health care dollar.
