Well, drinking age of 18 in those countries could be a factor as well.

Several of those countries (Germany, Belgium, Denmark, plus others) allow buying and drinking beer as young as 16.

Interesting stats, but one that I can not believe:

And yet they (for the most part) outperform American kids with more alcohol...

What does that matter between Ireland and the UK?

Same drinking age by the way at 18.

With less crime, better grades, and more fun.

I bet American arrest/conviction rates are higher though.

But that's only 5 million out of 65, with another 2 million in Northern Ireland. Doesn't really explain it to me.

People get hammered in the U.K., not sure why this surprises people.

How is it remotely possible that the UK has 20% higher drinking rate than Ireland does? Sure they've got the Northern part, but I didn't think Ireland would only be 50%.

Beer doesn't count as alcohol in Ireland. Trust me, my beard is red.

The Europeans start drinking pretty much as early as I want. My mother's father was an air force colonel and she wasn't allowed to even go in a date till she left his household but she started drinking when she was 13-14 I believe.

When my mother was in college in Germany in the 70s, the dorm drink machines all had beer in them.
