I love when those dumbasses get caught out in the middle and have to do the reverse of shame back in to the turning lane.

Would you rather them stop way back from the light???

It depends where the vehicle detector is. I lived in a city where the spot was known to be 15-20 feet behind the line (I guess the programming was assuming multiple cars were waiting). If you stopped that far back you could "trick" the light to change a lot faster.

You ever seen people who can’t stand still and constantly twitch? They do the same thing at traffic lights.

This doesn't bother me as much as the ones that poke their vehicle slightly into the travel lane from a store exit.

I’ve always seen the opposite. Too far back
It's almost always people stopping WAY TOO FAR back from the crosswalk.

And it's also, when the light is still green, people REFUSING to get out into the intersection in anticipation of their left turn.

The OP's concern is a tiny slice of overall intersection incompetence. Vastly more likely are the 2 instances I've enumerated.

Why?

Also why at stop signs. This especially irks me if I am towing my 34' travel trailer and I want to turn.

So you're the guy that won't pull up to the line, and leave a 4 car gap between you and the one in front of you.
No. Are you the a-hole that pulls up beside me when I'm trying to make a right on red, and every time I inch out to see what's coming from the left, you pull up further to block my sight line?

I hope your fricking truck rusts.

You have to get up there and trigger the sensors. Folks who lag back off the line mess up the system.

Nothing worse than a dumb frick turning left who doesn’t pull far enough up to where the sensor doesn’t know they’re there so the light never gives you a green arrow.

If possible, I veer in their direction and correct at the last second.

Normally I avoid these, but a cop tried to give me a ticket once for not stopping at a stop sign. Well the dumbass in front of me pulled up way past the stop sign and I was stopped at the appropriate spot just behind the white line. He said I should have stopped again even though I was stopped at the right spot... I told him give me the ticket and he didn't. Hammond LA.
The cop is wrong. I went to driving school when I was a teenager and I specifically remember someone asking this question and the instructor said you do not have to stop again.

Unless the driving instructor was wrong, but I doubt it. It was his job, plus it makes logical sense that you shouldn’t have to pull up past the line and stop again.

The legal requirement is to stop at the white line and I am all for doing this. However, some people know that the cut lines in the street are where the sensors are located and if you do not pull up to where they recognize your vehicle, it will not cycle the lights for you. This is especially true for motorcycles.
Most police personnel will not tickets unless they are beyond the farthest cut line.
I am not endorsing this practice, but you did ask for reasons and this is one possible answer.
