Cost of the fishing company bill is nothing compared to the cost of loss of time if you are in the gulf

these fishing operations can take a very long time… things get dropped( had time someone dropped a wrench down there).. times when the wireline tools get stuck and the tool and wire snap off with a couple thousand feet of wire down hole …. you send a spear down to try to get the wire… drilling offshore is expensive.

From Google….
Jackups: Around $118,000 per day.
Semisubmersibles: Around $368,000 per day.
Drillships: Around $419,000 per day.
Ultra-deepwater rigs: May reach $500,000 per day or higher.
Floating deepwater rigs: Valaris' average daily rig revenues in Q3 2023 were $279,000, up from $252,000 in Q2.
Diamond Offshore's floating rigs: Average day rate was $307,000 in Q3 2023, up from $299,000 in Q2.

I was working offshore years ago when we had the derrickman on the brake while tripping pipe to get him some experience. It was on a Sunday which is the day we would usually have the weekly fire drills. Part of the drill was to secure the well by closing the BOPs. The green driller walked over to close the BOP but instead of closing the pipe rams he closed the blind rams on the pipe. All of us who watched it happen had that same look on our faces as the people in this video.

What’s really fun is losing nuclear tools downhole

Everyone definitely doesn’t panic including the local news in that situation

Fishing ops were great to me, easy money for days/weeks at a time

Looks like they were on their last stand. Derrick hand was back on the floor and just unlatched the elevators not checking to see if the slips were set.
Bet he wishes now he had stayed up in the derrick.

We once lost some sources on an offshore exploration well in Africa. The well was a duster so they ended up cutting and pulling all the casing. The idiot Atomic agency kept telling us we had to place a sign showing there was radioactive material in the well. I could not make them understand there was no casing or well to put a sign on. I finally got tired of arguing with them and told them I'd have the work boat drop one overboard in the area.

Gonna have to be fished out. There's an entire industry dedicated to fishing.

The drilling pipe is in sections. As you drill down, you must add a section of pipe. In this case, the elevator was lowering a pipe and he unlatched it before slips were put on the pipe to hold it in place and it fell down into the drill hole.

They’ll call a fishing crew that has tools to retrieve it. It’s not cheap.

Here is a video of the proper way to trip pipe. Complete with cig hanging out of his mouth and flipping the bird. This man is a professional

Very interesting. Thanks

What is the purpose of the chain they wrap around the pipe?
