New Orleans icons deserve a proper New Orleans send off.

The David Bowie and Prince second lines were cringe fests.

I was at the Dr. John secondline yesterday. I would assume that less than a quarter were people who actually grew up in Treme much less New Orleans as a whole. A lot of good to do looking gray hair folks who prob own second homes in the city and Bywater brats.

Well, Kermit Ruffins put on Dr. John's, so I think that makes it pretty legit. If you don't like it, stay home.

I remember New Orleans in the Summer of 2005 before Katrina. It was a tired, worn out city, it seemed. I remember thinking how depressing things were. It was early August and I made a trip home and driving through the city just felt sad. Garbage everywhere. Grass growing high. Crime. No reason to be there. Tourists came, but it was all French Quarter stuff, it seemed, and there wasn't much reason for it.

Then Katrina hit and it was all lost and that was terrible. People came back and fought for the city and tried to recover it and a lot of energy came back for years. That was good. So, if those people and the people who came after want to Second Line, more power to them. New Orleans is a port city and has always been a place that people come TO. Some stay. The provincialism of New Orleanians that you have to go back generations to be "authentic" is dumb. And, it will eventually kill the city again.

don't remember there being this many pre Katrina until carpet bagging yuppies and hipsters infiltrated the area

Me either. Now every minor personality gets one and every wedding has one. Not the biggest problem facing humanity.
