That is a common fight when not agreed to before play is commenced. As you know, folks play following different rules. I prefer to allow playing as many bones as possible is a proper piece is drawn on the first go around. If no money is involved and the game is for fun, why not allow it?
The next time you play, make sure the others understand and agree to that option.

Been playing all week with the family. Play one domino at a time other than with doubles. I think we finished 2 games. Lots of breaks for meals and kids etc.
Only question we’ve fought over a bit is can you finish with a double? We’ve set on no the person must draw and if they can’t play the round continues.
