Yep. Over 30 years ago I knew a guy who had a pet nutria. His name was Hank. Followed us around like a dog.

You have reconciled my entire 2016 with this thread.

I just sent these pics to my dad and he said it looks and seems more like a Muskrat than a Nutria.... Is that possible?
Either way it does nothing to take away from how cool this story is.

I'll donate to the OT Go Fund Me. We've got to get that thing a cage and plastic pond so your sister can keep it.
Also, OP, that thing will reach sexual maturity within five to nine months. If she does keep it, may want to get that thing neutered and make sure it has its shots.

This is TigerOnTheMountain's post from 10:56 last night:
OP, I will buy your sister a chicken coop and plastic pond right now. Anything I can do to help and ensure this story has a happy ending.
Before this is all over with, this baby nutria (or muskrat) is going to end up with a "habitat" almost as nice as Mike's! This story cracks me up. The smart move is for the OP's sister to confess to her parents, but her hiding this thing for over month is what really makes it funny.

Thread of the year. What a great story.
Rarely does OP come through and deliver like this. This thread was all that I imagined, and more
ETA: I will put up money for a habitat as well.

Knowing this story makes 2016 worth it!!! I hope she can keep her new pet and it's safe for her to do so. Just too precious, this story. Maybe big brother could give her a cage for her pet???

Someone else suggested that so I think it is definitely possible. Im not sure how you differentiate other than the tail. I will have to look more closely, I think I'm scheduled to meet Tanden tomorrow morning

Nutria teeth are bright orange. Muskrat teeth are normally light orange to yellow.
ETA; RA'd for sticky. This thread needs to stay up top.

I guess your sister isn't the only one to rear a nutria

This story needs to make the local news. Make it happen. 100% serious.
Also, you and your sister need to write a children's book about this with a Louisiana Christmas theme. Profit.

Well we have an update folks! Stepmom she texted me:
"So the big secret is out
omg"
along with a video of her feeding it a potato chip. haha she isn't even mad!! I told y'all this really isn't surprising for my sister.
I ask her if my sister told her. Her reply "Um yes she did! Mom I have your Xmas present and then she confessed and I swear she was about to cry" Man she is smart! Confesses on Xmas eve morning and brings out the waterworks
She sent me this picture as well
and said "oh what a Christmas card"

I wonder if someone could fashion the little guy a top hat. If he had a top hat I bet it would soften the blow when the parents inevitably find out about Tanden.

Obviously nutria are rodents and they are actually very smart. She can train it if she wants to keep it, but fully grown it will always be a potential threat to bite her.
Not to mention it will have a strong reproductive urge so it will probably try to run away. She can take it to the vet and get it neutered I suppose

Will she let her keep it? I love this story!
