It is your duty to keep this thread updated from this point forward

Sounds like a good kid.
Exactly what I was thinking. That's impressive as hell for a twelve year old to be responsible enough to properly care for it, and hide it for weeks. I like the combination of hard work and hustle.

Cut its tail off and collect that 5$ bounty!!
I've seen this referenced a couple of times in this thread and I need some clarification.
Some kind of Louisiana state agency will give you money if mutilate a nutria and bring them the poor thing's tail?
Why??? Whatever for?

And, I wasn't trying to downplay what the OP's sister is doing, she's awesome. I hope that transition to her parents knowing goes smoothly, and I think it will knowing she wants to be a vet.

Cause they are an invasive species that destroy levees, properties and such. Originally from South America.
Tail bountys were as high as $7 a piece at one point.
I would think the State agency would be the Louisana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
Looking forward to updates. Another vote for thread of the year.

Yes, I can't remember which agencies it was that was paying the nutria bounty. But it was because nutrias (invasive species brought over from South America) do a lot of damage to levees and drainage canals when they burrow into them. So there was a $5 bounty per tail placed on them to curb the population with hopes of reducing damages to canals and levees caused by nutria burrows
The bounty wasn't for mutilating the nutria, it was to kill the nutria. Tail was the required proof of the kill to collect to bounty

Oh, okay. That makes sense.
I just kept reading "Take the tail and go get the bounty!" and I was like "Why do they give money just for the tail??? Are there thousands of tailless nutria roaming around Louisiana? Why's the tail special?"
I was feeling very sorry for the poor tailless nutria.

Now this is a good quality story here. I've shot a bunch of nutria and never realized they could be anything close to domesticated.
Stepmom probably thinks she's meeting a boy in the woods or something. I seriously doubts she suspects a swamp rodent is living in her house
Hopefully the parentals don't freak out too bad. Sounds like shes doing a pretty good job of taking care of it. This is some funny shite.

nutria are surprisingly cute when they are babies
full grown not so much
tell her to enjoy it while it lasts

I would pay to be a fly on the wall when your stepmother opens the dresser to put some clothes in and finds a nutria rat instead.
I would get her to tell before they find it. Spin it as she wants to be a veterinarian and is taking great care of it.
