She needs a gofundme page so we can raise money to pay her parents off

I would actually like to see how much this website could rally behind a cage/food fund, but then the parents would probably find out from the local news.

You shoukd be proud of your sis. She has learned a lot about raising an animal and kicked butt doing it.
Extremely proud of her, but this isnt out of the norm for her at all. She has always treated animals with as much respect and compassion as she does people. And she's a hunter to boot. Deer hunts with my old man all the time now that she is big enough to shoot a rifle. She's truly a blessing and wise way beyond her years.
ETA: And I just cant bring myself to tell them yet. Its harmless enough right now I feel pretty confident. I swore to her I would not tell them but I told her she was going to have to at some point. I also urged her that it would look better for her if she told them herself, rather than getting caught. Although, my parents arent the type to really freak out, which is really why I am more willing to let it play out. However, if they do freak out, I will likely be held as an accomplice

I love, love, love this story!
Are you sure it's not a muskrat? Googling pics, nutria & muskrats look very similar (nutria get much larger as adults though). Main difference seems to be the tail--round for nutria, flattened for muskrat. I can't really tell from the pics which it has. Nutria (at least adults) also have "long, conspicuous white whiskers". I think at least one article said nutria are born fully-furred with open eyes, while muskrats are born hairless with closed eyes. If it was furless when she found it, it might be a muskrat. Cute either way!

I'll give her $100 for that thing right now. I want it.

Seriously, start a gofundme so the OT can pay for some plywood, chicken wire, etc. and you can build her a cage out back with a little pond. Parents should be okay with that.

Most kids her age, or even twice her age ftm, aren't responsible enough to take care of a dog or cat, much less nurse a baby nutria.
Sounds like a good kid.

OP, I will buy your sister a chicken coop and plastic pond right now. Anything I can do to help and ensure this story has a happy ending.

My great uncle and dem have had several as pets. They kept them in pillow cases when they held them as adults.
