Dogs with seizures.

Had a heck of a night last night. My dog started smacking his jaws around 730 last night and drooling, but then it stopped. A couple hours later, he started doing it again, but now he fell off the couch and was foaming and spasming really bad. I initially thought he was poisoned and dying, so I wound up taking him to a emergency vet and they gave him an iv some meds to counteract the seizure. I gotta go pick him up and take him to my regular vet to get bloodwork done. Anybody ever dealt with dogs having seizures?

New onset seizure bad news. May be brain mass

Yes. Had a Border Collie puppy years ago that suffered from seizures. I didn't know it until I read up on them that epilepsy can be common in that breed. His seizures were very bad and had to be put down as they damaged his brain. That was very painful to watch. I wish you good luck and hope it's nothing serious. Maybe his can be controlled?

My dog had one two years ago but was likely bc she got into something, possibly ibuprofen.
My boss at my first job out of college had a border collie that was epileptic and she’d bring the dog to work everyday. Tough situation. Think she ultimately had to put him down bc the seizures got too bad.

We had a Chihuahua that fainted regularly.
Essentially his heart would stop and then get going again .
Went on for years until finally one two many faints and he never recovered

What flea/tick/heartworm stuff are you using? Start there.
Several years ago 1 of our Akitas would get seizures from time to time; we switched flea/tick/heartworm stuff and it fixed the problem. I don't remember which one we used or switched to.

Our black lab started having them in May. She was 8. We had to put her down late September. Really sorry to hear it. Ours had a brain tumor. I hope they can do something for yours...its rough and I feel your pain.

Are they on a monthly flea/heart medicine?
Our dog was on trifexis (I think) and had some when he was younger. Took him off and never had any again.

We had a collie in the 1980s that started having epileptic seizures at around 1 year old. The Vet prescribed phenobarbital. It took us a few months playing with the dosage to figure out the lowest amount that would still prevent seizures. Once we did, the dog never had another seizure and lived a good, full life (died at 12 years old). But he did seem just a little bit stoned all the time. Best of luck to you.

One lab we had started with seizures. She had found a piece of treated lumber in the back yard and was chewing on it daily. Come to find out that wood has arsenic in it. Removed all wood pieces and she never had another seizure.

Had a mutt that we found aw a puppy and kept. He had them sporadically for a few years. Then they started happening once a month or so. Within a year, they found tumors all over his body and we had to put him down. He was the most loyal dog ever. I still miss that bastard and it’s been 5 years since he died.
I hope your dogs seizures don’t become common. Seems like it’s not a good sign if they do,

I had a border collie/lab mix rescue puppy. She suffered from seizures about 4 times a year. The Vet got us to switch her diet, and she only got about 1 a year. It was very scary. One of us would immediately run down by her and hold her down so she wouldn't thrash around and get hurt.
She died this year after 14 years in our family.

You did the right thing taking your pup in. Now is the time to find out as to why. Good luck.

Four flea and tick products may cause seizures, tremors, and lost coordination in some cats and dogs.
Food and Drug Administration officials have received thousands of reports of adverse events connected with three products—Bravecto, Nexgard, and Simparica—containing drugs in the isoxazoline class. The agency approved a fourth product, Credelio, containing a drug in the class this year.

My beagle had epileptic seizures her whole life. She lived until age 16 and besides the seizures was completely healthy. That might be different than new onset of seizures later in life though.

Could be epilepsy. Can be treated with phenobarbital or potassium bromide. Your vet can fugure out the better option and prescribe it.

Yeah I wanted to try to wait it out until the morning, but I was so scary I couldn't chance it. Man vet care is crazy expensive btw.

My boxer had seizures and they put him on meds that helped. I forget the name of those meds but it's the same thing used for humans. He took 2 doses daily and the seizures stopped. The trick was finding the right dosage. Make sure you have water and food available right after the seizure because your dog will need it.
Medication is phenobarbital
