You apparently live in North Texas. That means you've probably heard, along with a slew of your neighbors, about all the kids that die in North Texas every year after being left in a car. That's why people are so crazy about the issue.
If you want to keep the original windows in your vehicle, don't leave your dog in the car.

I remember the day when you could leave the window down with the dog and two kids in it and go in the store for 10 minutes and all three would still be alive where I left them.

If I walked by and saw a dog in the car, but the car was running, I would probably just continue on. I might look down to see water dripping out to be sure the AC was on.

I've brought my dog into Target before. Just told them he was a service dog and they let me do as I pleased

I leave my dog in my car and leave AC on. I will not do it if I am going to be more than 5-10 minutes. She loves riding in the car so I look at it as more of a treat for her. I don't see the big deal. People walking by can clearly tell the car is running and my dog would not look like she was about to die from heat exhaustion!
Now those who drive with their dogs in the back of pickup trucks ..... Saw three dead dogs on the freeway one AM about 5 years ago after a pickup got into an accident. These were big dogs too - 60-75 pounds each. Very sad. Then just a few weeks ago a dog jumped out of a moving pickup ahead of me, got hit, and stumbled to the barrier in the middle of a toll road. I pulled stopped in the left lane and the cars in the other lanes did as well. We essentially shut down a 4 lane toll road to get this dog in his truck (the back seat this time). Rex was going to be okay but pretty sure he broke his leg, and my suit pants are now ruined from his blood, but he needed saving.

You could pass out in the store and end up in the ER while your dog dies of heatstroke. Responsible owners leave the dog at home.
