When I was figuring out which to use, this was the only brand that not only did lots of research before creating a food, but who continues to do it and changes their recipe as they go.

That said, I think any decent food is probably fine. This shite is expensive as hell; I'm just too lazy to change it.

Royal Canin is a con job. It pays it's Vets to spew it's garbage. RC is not a great brand at all. It's mid tier at best and way overpriced for being mid tier.

It's not bad. Question is about price.

Science diet is the one that really pays the vets.

They are in a lot of Vets, not every Vet carries them or plays the selling dog food game.

I agree, Science Diet is the same way as well.

I agree about the science diet and especially royal canin. By being "breed specific" they try and trick people into thinking how great a food it is for their specific dog when in all actuality its no better than pedigree or Purina and costs three times as much. Look on the ingridents list on a lot of these foods and you will see the first few on things are always corn, wheat, some kind of animal fat, animal by products, and soy. Dogs can't digest the corn, wheats, and soy and companies just use them as fillers. Dogs eat, goes straight through them and crap it out, then hungry again. My older male shepherd weighs 103 and he eats four cups of food a day and nothing else.

lulz at this thread.

my vet told me that every one of those specialty dog foods are crap and worse for your dog than just plain old purina dog chow. he said every single one of them at one time or other has been recalled..science diet, etc for problems.

i heeded his advice and have been giving my german sheppard mix good ol' dog chow by the folks WHO KNOW WHAT THE HELL THEY'RE DOING AT PURINA..and he's healthy as an ox.

occasionally he gets bacon grease over it or a marrow bone or ribeye bone and he's happy as hell.

Does feeding your dog off of the ole human plate every meal hurt them? Like just a piece of ham sammich or a few bites of chicken and shite like that?

There are some foods that dogs can't digest well, and some that are toxic.. like grapes and avocados.. but chicken and ham and shite is more than fine for dogs.

I've considered getting off dog food altogether. But I couldn't do raw diet. My dog loves food/smells way too much to eat raw veggies and meat. I'd have to cook it.

My wife is convinced I am killing our dog by letting him eat a bite of hot dog and shite. My grandfather fed his dogs table scraps for 70 years and it never once killed a dog

As long as you are strict and do a slow transition they love it. You will have to adjust the veggies to what your dog prefers though.

My dog doesn't even eat dog treats anymore unless someone else gives her some, frozen or dried banana and apple is what we usually give her. Unless my wife makes homemade fruit/veggie cookies that we refer to as doggie crack. Works great for doing therapy dog stuff because hospitals won't let you bring in dog treats, but they don't say anything about banana chips. Plus I like them too.

You should anyway. Otherwise, you're unnecessarily exposing your dog to all sorts of pathogens.

Also, vets aren't getting paid by Science Diet or any other company.

oh for god's sake you can't hurt a damn dog. ever seen them drink water from the street drain that is mixed with oils from cars and god konws what all else.

green bag purina and the occasional marrow bone and your dog will live to be happy and healthy.

again, lulz at those duped into buying expensive crazy/organic science diet shite in this thread.

its a dog people.

keep in mind that we are talking about a creature that sits around licking his balls all day for entertainment...if left unchecked, he will gladly dive right in to any festering dead creature along side of the highway for a meal and be totally happy with it.

with that in mind, I am thinking that it is not all that critical which dog food you buy, as those are marketed to people instead of dogs...just get some mid-grade dogfood that he likes and don't sweat over it any at all...

if it makes you feel better, get a small bag of the overpriced stuff to display when guests come over...

You act like everyone is in the same situation. I was feeding my Chocolate Lab a common "mid grade" food. He began to have seizures from the grain and I was recommended to change the protein in his food. Changed him to Lamb and he hasn't had one since. There is a need for some of these more expensive foods, just because you don't need it doesn't mean no dogs do. I don't buy more expensive food to "display when guests come over", I buy it so I don't have to watch my dog seize all the time.

My Vet told me that the grain in Dog Chow could be giving my dog seizures, so I switched to Pro Plan, which is still made by
