I swapped my two dogs to Canidae Life Stages when I got the second as a puppy. My older dog eats half of what he used to, has a lot more energy and acts much happier since the switch.
When you put the numbers to it, buying the 44 pound bag of it is actually cheaper than buying full of filler food from the grocery store too. Less than a dollar a pound buying the 44 pound bag.

The proof is in the coat, the energy, and the lean muscle.
Since feeding my dog and cat a raw, grain free diet I have noticed both of their coats are shinier, softer, and overall healthier. Their energy levels are exactly where they should be, and they sleep longer because of it. And both my dog and cat look like they are bodybuilders straight out of a gym after an intense workout.
It is not a lie, it is not a fad, and it is not a sham.

keep in mind that we are talking about a creature that sits around licking his balls all day for entertainment...if left unchecked, he will gladly dive right in to any festering dead creature along side of the highway for a meal and be totally happy with it. with that in mind, I am thinking that it is not all that critical which dog food you buy, as those are marketed to people instead of dogs...just get some mid-grade dogfood that he likes and don't sweat over it any at all... if it makes you feel better, get a small bag of the overpriced stuff to display when guests come over...
Excellent post...
Always fed mine Purina and table scraps...never had a problem with him.

Ok I don't care if my dog has shinier hair than me. He sleeps plenty. And I'm not entering him in any doggy body building competitions. So what's the point?

Three large male GSDs in my household. They all eat Ideal Balance Grain Free.

You just said it. Never had a problem. Problem is many people don't realize their dogs are having problems. A food allergy is a food allergy.
One thing about the expensive dog food. It tends to last longer. When the dog gets full, he stays full for a while. I noticed when I switched from pedigree to natural balance and wellness that he went from eating a 15 lb bag in one month to three months.

Higher fat/protein content keeps dogs filled longer and you feed them less food because of the fat content.
Helps food last longer too.

I can feed my dog on the BARF diet for cheaper and a lot better than most dry dog food.
Details? I'd like this option but figured it was super expensive.

Have three German shepherds and I have always fed them a rotational diet of orijen and acana. The new one they are on right now is the acana pork and butternut squash. But if you don't need a grain free food the Fromm gold is very good as well.

Purina One Smart Blend, Lamb and Rice formula. It's readily available, moderately priced, and the vets will approve. It doesn't stink up your home, either.
Vets say to stay away from food with colors added to look healthy, fwiw. And the problem with cheaper brands, you never know where they are getting their ingredients.

You buy whole chickens in bulk, you can buy the cheap out of date chicken as well. You can get anything freezer burned and such. Dog stomachs can handle it once you transition them to it.
You supplement with a lot of the same vegetables you buy for yourself in bulk as well to make the glop.

My dogs get Royal Canin. Went from TOTW to Blue Buffalo to Wellness now to RC. Royal Canin has given my dogs the most energy and the best stools of the aforementioned.

Boxer with Kirkland brand Salmon.
Did Victor and Diamond Naturals for awhile. Kirkland brand was just cheaper and easier to find.

When I was figuring out which to use, this was the only brand that not only did lots of research before creating a food, but who continues to do it and changes their recipe as they go.
That said, I think any decent food is probably fine. This shite is expensive as hell; I'm just too lazy to change it.

thinking about switching from RC. Come to find out its reputation is solely on marketing. Once i'm done with these bags i'll be looking to switch.
