are you the receptionist?
No my office is right next to his. So when people see his door closed, they always ask is he in, does he have a meeting, when will he be back, etc....

I don't have to let you know if I am out of the office. That's why I'm the boss and I can shite on Debra's desk anytime I feel the need.

I am not sure what this means? Do you work a traditional 5 day work week or do you usually work weekends?
I'll usually work 6-7 days a week depending on what is happening at work. Sat/Sun, unless something super important is going on or it's an emergency situation, I'm in at 5am and out by around lunch time.
My point to him was that, I don't work full days on the weekends, so it shouldn't be counted as vacation days against my available balance. Also told him that if he wanted to play that game, I would immediately start working 40 hour work weeks. Shut him up with the quickness.

Meh, bosses get to do what they want. Kinda why he pays us.
Maybe it's just me, but I don't care how important I thought I am, how large the company is or how many employees I have working for me, I wouldn't have my employees remind me of my schedule. That's something a boss should be able to handle on his own. Prioritizing and efficiency. If he/she can't remember a specific time to do something, evidently it's not that important to them.

As a point of courtesy, I let people know when I'm out. Certain customerers have my cell and call me anytime. They are the ones who are important, anyway.

I didn't feel as if it were out of the question. And I was pissed because I lost 6 days of vacation at the beginning of May because of him. He can pound sand for all I care.

I don't have "official" vacation or sick days, but it is also just me and my boss. And we work from home when needed or whatever. We are also not unavailable to each other outside of "official business hours". There's no paperwork or anything for days taken off. Of course, this works because it is just us. The more you grow, the better chance you have of someone taking advantage of things like this.
I am the exact same way. I always feel guilty taking time off. I shouldn't, but I do. And because it is so relaxed, I don't want to take advantage.

I technically have no limit on time off, which means I probably take less than I otherwise could if I got some number of weeks.

Well yeah, a good boss will try to be consistent with the office protocols.

I have 5 weeks of vacation. Don't think I have ever taken even three.

I typically talk to my boss as soon as I get into the office. Not always about work stuff, sometimes just shooting the shite. If I want to take full days off I send a meeting request to her so that it's on both of our calendars. She doesn't do the same to me, but she does tell me when she's going to be out of the office.
If I'm working a half day or something, it doesn't go on anyone's calendar.

I would be the same way if I didn't have vacation days. Very doubtful that I'd take 4 weeks of vacation if I had unlimited. But, because I accrue 4 weeks of vacation per year, I don't feel bad taking it.

Idk what kind of work you do, but does it really matter? Do they have to be physically present to answer your questions, respond to emails, or give you orders?
