Does it make sense to buy your own modem for Comcast instead of renting?

I am currently paying $8 per month for the modem, but soon moving to a new home. I am thinking about ditching their rental modem and getting my own when I move. I have paid $8 per month for over 3 years now ($8*36 = $288) and I can't help but think I could have got a great modem for much less than that.

What are some good modems out there that a compatible with Comcast? I have the Blast internet plan which gives me speeds of 50 MBPs and I want the new modem to be able to handle that.

Edited to add -->

FML: This is the modem I have currently and it is only $79 on Amazon and I have paid $288 to Comcast so far for it - ubee U10C035.30 D3.0 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem

I bet when you got it three years ago it was worth $288 though.

Unless you're making a 288 joke, that is.

Personally, I rent and think it isn't a bad deal b/c if the modem fails I just get another one for free. That's happened before.

It's a terrible deal. A modem should last you 5 years minimum. You are paying for a new one every 10 months.

This. If you buy one and it breaks and you're not sure if it's the modem or the service, comcast will charge you like $80 for a tech to come out.

Plus, what if you switch providers? You might be stuck with a modem you can't use.

I'm not saying you shouldn't buy your own, but It's not always a no-brainier.

Like having your oil changed by someone else, some things aren't worth the hassle. Just rent.

Motorola SB 6121 for the win!

You can't beat the SurfBoard modems in my opinion. They're simple, and they work. It's not a modem/router/wireless access point/switch. It's just a modem. Straight bridge to your router. Unbeatable.

Wish to hell there was Verizon FiOS as an option back home. Had Comcast for a few months up here but after paying for the "upgrade" 25d/15u service and it slowing to a crawl every evening I ditched them when Verizon had some special going on in the area. Pay less now and have a 50d/40u connection that doesn't fade.

Seems you've answered your own question.

I bought mine a couple years back because I got a modem/wireless router all in one. I've never looked back. Buy the warranty and in case it fails (almost never happens with top brands) the in store warranty replaces.

ps...always surge protect. Both electric and cable feed protection.

I think that's the one I got. I don't see the point in renting at all. I've been on the Internet since 1993 or so and can't remember a modem failing in probably 15 years at least. Maybe ever.

Side question. Can one run multiple modems on cox? Plug in two modems in the same house?

I have a hard time getting decent wifi in all rooms of the house.

So you want two modems and pay for 2 services? Sounds like you just need to add one or two wireless access points, or possibly just get a better one and/or relocate it.

LINK those are the tits.

You need a second extra wifi router for that, not a modem. You can use the second router to 'extend' the signal from the primary.

Back to the OP:

I think I am going to go with the Motorola Surfboard SB6121 modem afterall. It has good reviews online. Max speed it can handle is download speeds up to 172 Mbps and upload speeds up to 131 Mbps, which is way more than what I get currently and should also be more than enough for the near future.

He doesn't need a router. He needs wireless access points.

I've owned two cable modems over the last 10 years. The first one didn't break; it was DOCSIS 2, and I wanted 3. I sold it for $25 or so. Total expenditure: About $150. Rental would have been more like $1000. I've never paid Cox for a service call. Renting a cable modem is dumb.

For $13 more you can get the 6141 that has speeds up to 343 Mbps down and 131 up.

You will have to call your cable company so they can activate that one on your account.
