All of these rumors about shrimp boats supplying subs are nothing but unadulterated El Toro Poo Poo.
Google “C J Christ “ if you want to read the truth. Mr C J studied all of the Chancellory records of the Krauts. He even went to Germany and met with Admiral Doenitz.
There was no priest in the belfry sending signals , the Germans were not eating Dufrene’s French Bread from Golden Meadow. And the Cheramies were not selling fuel to submarines.
Ira Pete ( Pitre) from Morgan City was a shrimper from Morgan City that brought in survivors from the attacks.
Some victims were actually picked up in Montegut at the Texaco vacility there in civilian cars. station wagons and such. There were brought to Dr Allen Ellender’s (son of Senator Allen Ellender). clinic/hospital for treatment.
Y’all need to study y’all GOM WWW2 history. It is a rabbit hole. Houma had a blimp base to house blimps that were used specifically against submarines. The Widgeon that was erroneously cited with the sinking of the sub was based out of Houma. I’ve spent countless hours studying submarine warfare in the Gulf.
Google the Submarine Warfare records of the GOM. You will find vessel inf for all attacks in the GOM. Written from both sides.
Google the folks I mentioned. Also Frank Henry who searched with CJ.
When they first stated searching they went to DeYeide salvage in Houma and picked up a 36” ring gear to drag behind their dive boat hoping to hear steel hitting steel.
Google the names. I know what I’m talking about.
Homer Hickham has written also.

Bigfish, thanks for the post. Do you know anything about sunken U boats near Chandeleur Island chain?
Do you agree that only one U boat was sunk in Gulf of Mexico ?

Yes. As far as local.
Uboat.net. A wealth of information. They was another sunk close to the Florida Straits by a destroyer if IIRCC. SE of the Dry Tortugas.
Here is a link that you will need some digging into. Maps of sinking and attacks. Worldwide. In sectors. It’s a rabbit hole. A lot of info that you can cross check against sources.
I am presently searching for a fine article that debunks the rumors of coonasses supplying German subs. As If.
UNO article
Y’all need to Google CJ Christ submarine GOM Houma WW2.
You won’t be able to stop reading.

Isn’t the old mythology that some even came up Bayou Lafourche?
I worked offshore in the early 70s. The old gentleman I worked for told me someone found a german inflatablable life raft down the bayou with movie tickets stubs for theater in Houma along with bread bags from Houma bakery. It was thought UBoat landed a party for supplies.

An old story passed along. All bullshite.
You aren’t going to get to close to Terrebonne -Lafourche in a submarine. I’m tired. All of those tales are shown to be not feasible.
You think some Germans of of of submarine could make showtime in Golden Meadow and not be noticed ? The logistics of leaving a submarine and going to the movies in Golden Meadow don’t add.
Some folks will believe anything.
( Don’t tell anybody but Hitler is living in the old fort on Grande Terre. He was actually harboring Whitey Bulger when he was hiding out in Grand Isle. )

Same U boat as I posted before, different article and year

I was told Gulf Shores and Ft Morgan residents back then were told to put up black paper in the windows facing the Gulf so the U Boats couldn’t see the lights at night and come ashore to steal fuel and supplies. Mobile Paper wouldn’t run it because they didn’t want to let people know German U boats were on the Coast and in Mobile Bay.

Dang, odd that they were told to put it up but, did not tell them the reason. I guess "Loose lips, sink ships."

The problem is I knew a fair number of ex Nazis and I can’t believe that they would back off a turkey shoot because we accidentally sunk one U-boat.
So the American story is we totally stopped the U boats by sinking one in the Gulf and 3 on the east coast. They had what 3 dozen Uboats here that sunk 100s of ships but they all just vanished, or they all just gave up and went away and apparently were sunk somewhere else. Sorry that’s not the Germans I know, they don’t give up like that. It reaks of bullshite to me.

During the years 1942 and 1943, a fleet of over 20 German U-boats cruised the Gulf, seeking to disrupt the vital flow of oil carried by tankers from ports in …
It was in May 1942 that Hitler authorized “Operation Drumbeat” which resulted in 23 U-boats being assigned to venture into the Gulf of Mexico.
It was in May 1942 that Hitler authorized “Operation Drumbeat” which resulted in 23 U-boats being assigned to venture into the Gulf of Mexico. There they attacked American and allied shipping sometimes even within sight of the coast from Texas to Florida. The primary target were tankers carrying oil and fuel but any shipping including passenger vessels were subject to attack. One sailing vessel was even sunk. In 1942 and 1943, 76 ships were attacked by U-Boats in the Gulf and the Florida Straits, with 53 of them reported as sunk.
Wanting to avoid panic along the Gulf coast over the German U-boat operations in 1942, the U.S. government censored news coverage of the large number of ships being sunk there and did not require nighttime blackouts. While that lack of information may have quieted some fears inland, the policy of not requiring blackouts actually caused a major problem for shipping along the coast. People along the coast did not need news media to tell them what was happening in the Gulf as wreckage and bodies were washing up on beaches and because of no blackouts several ships were sunk by U-boats when their silhouettes stood out against lights along the coast.

So if the coastal public didn't need the media to inform them of U-boat activity in the GOM, why didn't they have enough sense to turn out the lights?
A) Dumbass Coon Asses
B) Enemy collaboration

Not the GOM, but my father was a young boy during WWII. His family lived on Vilano Beach just north of St Augustine Fl. He said ships would run aground during the war trying to hug the coast line attempting to avoid UBoats.

No clue why we didn’t act properly against the u-boat threat but according to a documentary I saw years ago, they said the secretary of navy or whoever was in charge of this hated the British and ignored every warning and everything they told us. In true American fashion we just covered it up until it got ridiculous then finally someone came to their senses and fired or retired his sorry arse and started with convoys air patrols etc, they apparently sunk four whole u boats and scared them away. Again I call bullshite on this

How many U-boats were lost during ww2?
785
This made it more difficult for the U-boats to succeed in their attacks. Germany built 1,162 U-boats during World War II and 785 were destroyed by the end of the war. The remaining 377 U-boats were surrendered (or scuttled by the Germans).Jul 8, 2022
What was the mortality rate of U-boats in ww2?
a 75%
U-boat submariners had a 75% casualty rate, the highest of all German forces during the war. (Not 90% like I thought sorry )
Hell maybe we did suck, in typical German fashion they kept immaculate records.

He has a lot of blood on this hands.
My great grandfather was a captain in the merchant marines at the time and his route was like NY to London during the entire war.

Somebody shoulda told em. Don’t mess with the Grand Isle locals. Of which there weren’t that many at the time, but all it takes is one to take down a U-boat.

Supposedly Cajun shrimpers would rendevous with them and sell them diesel and fresh food for gold.
Although not a documentary, Glen Pitre wrote and directed the movie The Scoundrel’s Wife. The movie was also named The Home Front depending on release. It stars Tatum O’Neil, Tim Curry, Julian Sands, and Lacey Chabert. It tells a story about shrimp boats that were possibly helping the Germans and a German refugee that moved in to town. Here is a review and plot summary from Roger Ebert:
quote:
O'Neal stars, in her first role since "Basquiat" (1996), as Camille Picou, the widow of a shrimp boat captain who was making ends meet by smuggling in Chinese aliens. He may have been guilty of the murder of some of them, and Camille may have been an accomplice--at least that's what the local people think. She's raising two teenagers; her son, Blue (Patrick McCollough), and daughter Florida (Chabert), when World War II begins, and the Coast Guard entrusts a local boy, the untested young ensign Jack Burwell (Bailey), to monitor fishing activities and keep an eye out for spies.
Are there spies in Cut Off? There are certainly suspicious characters. One of them is the German refugee Dr. Lenz (Sands), said to be Jewish, who has settled in as the only local doctor. Another, oddly enough, is the local priest, Father Antoine (Curry), who is charmingly drunk much of the time but also spends ominous evenings in the cemetery, using an iron cross as an antenna for his shortwave radio.
Whether the priest is a spy (and whether the doctor is all he says he is) will not be discussed here. There are two possible romances in the film, one between the widow Picou and the German, the other between the ensign and young Florida. There is also much malicious gossip, all adding up to a scene in the doctor's front yard when a lynch crowd turns up and seems remarkably easy to convince of first one story and then another.

Friend of my dad was on a ship that was torpedoed by a U boat, when they were in their life boats, the sub surfaced next to them. Germans gave them cigarettes and water and told them, “Roosevelt got you into this war, let him get you out of this.”
