I don't know which buttons cross over from model to model and suggest you ask on the G-Shock forum on Watchuseek but I will tell you when your order the buttons order some extra e-clips (that is what Casio calls the small circlips that hold the bottoms as they have a habit of flying away. Alternatively, you can do the work inside a clear plastic back.

Traded in my Rolex for the Casio ProTrek PWR-3000. The true Casio GOAT. Solar powered ABC watch, daily time updates from the atomic clock in Colorado. I will never (need to) own a different watch.

Do you not Seiko Sport 5
007s and 009s have proven... Insufficient for how rough I am
My last 009 I gouged up the bezel within minutes of diving into the water.
None of the auto watches will charge after a month. They just rattle.

I know, it's your trailer park owners property.

And for those about to laugh at it being a casio, I've broken every other daily beater brand
The DVs are funny to me since the G-Shock squares are the quintessential beater for even the most serious of watch aficionados. I have had at least one since the summer of 1983. The original DW-5000 was a revolutionary watch.

I wasn't aware I had ever worn your watch.

you can get one with a simple display but it will still dance and sing if you press the right buttons.
based on your query I'd advise you to never change modes so you are not stuck in mode b,c, or e without a clue how to get back.
i guarandamntee you better keep the directions.
and take copies and blow up each page. its terribly teeny font.
you may have a magnifying glass and scoff at 2 font.

40 years is about right for the inexpensive part. It all started with the first Casiotron in 1974 (first ones didn't get to the US until 1975). They came out during the transition from on-demand LED displays to LCD. They weren't cheap at about $500 and to put that in perspective around this time you could get cheap manual wind mechanicals for $15-20.
