Mine had 4 requests for both our sons. No Marines, no Army, no police, no firefighter. So far my oldest is going to the Marines and youngest about to be in HS still wants to be a firefighter

My husband is a former Marine Corps recruiter. He would always counsel his recruits to select a MOS that transitions well in civilian life. He also said that all the high scoring ASVAB kids wanted infantry and he would try his best to talk them out of it. You may want to try to steer him into intelligence, logistics, etc.

Most people who join the Marines aren’t enlisting to drive trucks or do paperwork.

If by “common sense is a big problem” you mean he has none, the Marines will be perfect for him. If, on the other hand you mean he has some and things have to make sense to him, the Marines are the wrong answer.

If he is as bright as you say, why the hell is he choosing infantry?

Well I don't know. I feel he has none but then I talk to his friends and realize none of them do. His younger brother has a lot of common sense but doesn't do as well academically.

I'm not meaning to say he's bright or not, just posting scores to see if that serves any kind of purpose regarding Marines. I don't know much about officer enlistment and that kind of stuff, but b/c of this thread I know more about it. He wouldn't really give an answer on why he wants to do infantry.

Because he figures if he's going to be a Marine, he might as well do Marine shite.

it's one thing for a kid to have a passion and an aptitude and you can "let them fly", but in this case, I believe you said he's still to young to enlist without your consent? you've got to be the dad and educate him, make him convince you why this is a smart thing, and what his objectives long term will be, there's a reason they want kids that young to be draft eligible, they don't want anything to have to make sense or be debated when it's time to charge that machine gun nest on the other side of the minefield

This story is basically the same as mine. I enlisted in the Marines and went infantry at 17. My mom about had an aneurism but my dad convinced her to sign saying “He’s gonna be 18 in a few months and do whatever he wants anyways.”

So I enlisted and a few months later later 9/11 happened Good times

I wouldn’t trade my time in the Corps for anything but if he’s going infantry he needs to have a plan for when he gets out that doesn’t involve him becoming a cop. Use the GI Bill, go to school and be a normal person when he grows up.

I did but his only reply was he’d rather go through boot camp at 18 then 22.

Thats some flawed reasoning. Def should go the officer route.

I would do everything I can as a father to keep my son from joining army or marines right now

There is nothing fun about your son having boots on the ground in the Middle East fighting for billionaires

When he turns 18, he's going to do what he wants to do and doesn't need your input. Until then, he needs your signature. You still got a couple of months till then. I'd try to talk him into another MOS that he could use after enlistement. Or try to talk him into ROTC and get commisioned after college. Either way, I'm glad that good, smart, young men in this generation are still eager to serve their country. Makes me hopeful that there's still something worth fighting for.

If he goes in now he can be a Marine just in time for a week long bender known as the 250th Bday of the Corps the week of 11/10.
