People at my work stopped doing it a couple years ago. Now it is all six sigma karate crap, and now more commonly the agile scrum master shite.

I love that people think I'm a hipster. How many guys who were President of the Young Republicans in college (in 1972 RMN's re-election year) are considered hipsters? I'm honored.

Don't tease me. I know I'm not worthy.

Edited because my punctuation sucks.

Truth - if you graduated from a top tier school then you don't. If you're a University of Phoenix type b-school graduate then you do.

The people that need to know about your qualifications will get that information from somewhere that isn't your email signature. When I see that, it makes me think low level office worker with no authority or real responsibility

Only acceptable designations to put after your name are. M.D. PHD. CPA. CFP, CFA, COO, cfo ceo. Basically anything that actually deserves respect. MBA, no.

My SIL does with every email to family. The funny thing is that she can't even hold a minimum wage job.

You have to ask if it serves a purpose.

As someone else said, PhD, MD, CPA, PE, etc. all convey a specific qualification that is necessary to give advice or do a job.

MBA is the same as MS or MA. Don't do it. If that's the highest degree you have then people only care about your job title, not degrees you don't need to do that job.

I have an MBA and would never do it. When I see others do it I always think they are desperate for some sort of recognition or validation.

Another one that is funny is nurses with a bachelors degree; they always have RN, BSN in their signatures. Uh, congrats on the degree??

I have an uncle that puts PhD on his personal email and correspondence like Christmas cards.

And yeah, he's a major prick.

I do it but it is not arrogant or douchey because I don't really have an MBA.

May be worth the spin off, but what about the people that have MBA in their headline on LinkedIn?

I feel like it is reasonable to have when you are a student in the program but it should drop off once you graduate.

If it's for a business e-mail, I understand why nurses do it on a signature. They're e-mailing back and forth with other medical professionals and pharmacists all day, so I can see how it'd be pretty useful in that context.

I think the general rule of thumb for displaying degrees (not positions like CEO or VP or GC or whatever - works a little differently there) is that if the degree denotes a specific level of authority, especially legal or regulatory authority, within a professional context, use it. Otherwise, leave that stuff out. Don't put training certificates like PMP or Six Sigma or whatever because that's dumb.

Your next line (VP of..., Senior..., Assistant Director of..., etc., etc.) should hold more authority and be more descriptive, anyway.

In IT it is helpful to know what type of specialist you are dealing with, so I appreciate some of those credentials like CCNA, CCNP Voice, Red Hat Blah blah.

Back before 64% of the population had an MBA, I could see people putting it in their sig, but now it’s basically like putting your BA in it.

Unless your degree or certification is absolutely VITAL to the field you are claiming to possess expertise in (MD or JD, for example) it's stupid.

You work in sales for a mid-sized pet products company. I don't give a shite that you have an MA in international relations.

I work in engineering. Most people have engineer in their title, and we all have PE behind our names on business cards, email sigs, etc. That goes across the industry, not just where I work.

I have my PE but refuse to put it in my signature or on my business card. It would do nothing for me other than make me feel pretentious. However, I don't work in consulting or for a firm.

I'm ignorant on the how it works so is having yout PE not a requirement for your job? If so I'd say it really needs to be on there. If I'm a CPA I wouldn't want to give advice and a business card without denoting on it I'm a CPA.
