Love is a strong word. I'd go with lukewarm.

I can only speak for myself, yes. I grew up in BR but no longer live there. I can say that when the news broke yesterday my heart sank unlike hearing about any of the other similar tragic events. Not because I value BR lives more but it was saddening to see images I recognize. Looking at the droves of police cars, airline shut down, helicopters flying all around places I frequented as a kid...Celebration Station/Don Carters area is a great memory for me as a kid in the 80/90's. Now I think about the type of world we live in now vs then. I have to explain to my kids the images they see isnt the BR I grew up in and loved.

I cant imagine what those families of victims are going through.

My family has been here for about 100 years and I feel pretty comfortable saying it sucks. Everything is spread out, can't walk anywhere, it's hot, traffic sucks, crime sucks, politicians suck, we're not on the water, real estate is over priced, food is nothing special, I could go on and on

4) LSU (sorry, have to put it in here)
5) Women
6) Job opportunity (ObamaNotBad)
7) Conveniences of big city with small city feel
8) Crime is generally contained to one part of the city
9) Private & magnet schools are among best in country (obviously leaving out public school system, which is a disaster)
10) If you want to live in deep south, in a medium size city, it is the place to be.
11) Downtown revitalization, 3rd Street, Shaw Center
12) L'Auberge
13) Great neighborhoods (CCL, U Club, Oak Hills, Sherwood, etc etc)
14) Greater BR, including Zachary, Central & Ascension/Livingston for Public schools and country living/lots of property (if that is your thing)
15) Mississippi River, Live at 5, Fireworks on the Levee, USS Kidd
16) Mardi Gras w/out the NOLA hassle
17) St. Patty's Day parade!
18) French/Catholic influence is unique
19) Old State Capitol and Battle of BR
20) Mild winters, awesome springs and falls. (Summers are for traveling!)
21) Unlike most cities, does not feel "generic." Big on local options for shopping and eating out.
22) Louie's for breakfast, Flur-de-lis for lunch, Superior for dinner.
23) Hot Air Balloon Fest
24) Youth sports programs among the very best
25) Uniqueness in different areas of town create a diverse feel - Southdowns, Mid City, Garden District, LSU, South BR, Downtown, Spanish Town
26) Tin Roof Beer and Southern Craft Beer - our local breweries
27) Rural Life Museum
28) Vibrant recreation org - BREC

Yes, I love Baton Rouge. It's home, so it will always be a special place to me.

But am I glad to live somewhere else now? Yes.

Nope, and I've lived here most of my life.

I don't understand adults "love" for LSU, got my undergrad and masters there too, grew up being a huge fan, never missed a home game for almost 15 years. It's changed so much lately, the administration and miles fatigue has left me barely even keeping up with it anymore.

I love Baton Rouge for what it could be, not for what it is. I love the people who live in this city. I don't love the shitty government, shitty infrastructure, shitty crime, and shitty school system. I don't like their incompetent police force. I hate even more that outsiders are coming in to murder our police and burn down outr time. I hate how f&$king hot it is in the summer time. However, this is my home, and I'm going to do everything in my power to make it the best home I possibly can.

No, I don't hate Baton Rouge, though I did when I was younger. I see Baton Rouge as potential. If we can make Baton Rouge a better place, as it has clearly been on a tremendous upswing over the past decade, we can fix anywhere. If we can make Baton Rouge into a safe, fun, vibrant, desireable place to live, we can do anything. If we can save Baton Rouge, we can save the world.

I like Lafayette al lot, but I think BR definitely has a much better downtown than Lafayette. That may not have been the case 5 years ago, but it certainly is now.
