both have the same canister flush design that is 1000x better than old toilets

i am by no means an authority on toilets or flushing design, but i am curious about this claim you are making. generally speaking, it seems that old toilets all flush much better than the new "high efficiency" toilets that have to be flushed multiple times sometimes. are these flush cannisters or whatever a modern design that truly does work more effectively than old, basic toilets that just flushed higher volumes?

I have one in my home from the 50's. It's a hunk of porcelain. It doesn't go bad unless you literally break it.

The guts absolutely do go bad.

Replaced our kids' builder-quality bathroom toilet, and they haven't been able to clog it since. We got one of those where the ads show a dude flushing a bucket of golf balls...

Does any brand of flapper last longer than any other? or do they all end up turning to goo after 3-4 yrs?

They can develop calcium build up and seals can break down over time. Most of the time it just needs new tank guts or at worst, new seals.

I’m no expert either, just my personal experience. I’ve swapped out all the toilets in my house with the canister type & find they are less prone to leaking than the flap designs. And I’ve never had to flush more than once. I don’t really notice any difference in how much water is used.

The only way that I've found to really clear them out is using latex gloves and using a large wade of papertowels (like bounty, not cheap ones) and cleaning the udnerside of the rim.
Throw towels in the garbage.

I'm so glad you added this step. I followed your advice on my toilet and was about to put the used paper towels back in the kitchen to use for dinner last night but, thankfully, I went back and reread your instructions and realized I was supposed to throw them away. Phew!

Depending on how sucky your water is, the jets that blow the water into the bowl under the rim can get clogged.

Now you tell me. I've been using them with my chicken tenders afterwards for years.

Ah frick, beer beat me to it.
