1) testing doesn't get hold of it. All suspected people quarantining does. The turnaround time is finally getting to be under 3-5 days

Public health agencies and the CDC know the need. They restricted the available tests pretty heavily at first when they were more limited. They're becoming more widespread but still can be difficult to get and more difficult to get back.
Suspected people have a specific code to report and this is accounted for in the estimates made by the people that work well above my pay grade

I have no control over the "shelter in place" orders, etc. But everyone who has any febrile, respiratory or GI illness right now should be away from everyone else in the world right now, because you can just about bet that any febrile respiratory illness is this right now. Testing confirming that or not doesn't change it.


I sure would like the world to get back to normal, and I would like for it to get normal fast.

But right now, everyone with symptoms can be treated as a positive. The test helps confirm and treatment in some sicker folks.

If OP were tested and negative, he STILL should stay home and away from everyone until he's completely better + and arbitrary 1-3 days.

We are in the same boat, just chill.

One more general point of consideration for those asking for more testing:


The cost of the test is something around $1000, last I've gotten numbers. The new Abbot "quick turnaround" test is going to be something like $60/test before factoring in the price of the machine (a few thousand and every site that would run the test would need one or more) to run it and the PPE/personnel required to administer it (the availability is more important than the price there)


While I can't confirm this or back it up with signed legislation, I can bet that you and me are paying for everyone run. And when talking about someone like the OP, it doesn't matter if the test is positive or negative, he stays home, and the CDC counts him as "suspected" in their projections all the same.

It's not that.


1) Right now, we can say with near-certainty the number of people who die in the US per day.
2) With less certainty, we can say the number that die with coronavirus
3) With slightly less certainty than that, the number that died from coronavirus
4) With an estimate based on lack of testing but padded numbers to reflect the asymptomatic/lightly symptomatic that weren't tested, the number with coronavirus who will die.


He's talking about #4, you're talking about #2. They aren't at all the same thing.
