Is this your first move w/ movers?

Yes. Moving in our same neighborhood, so distance isn't a thing. I plan to pack all belongings into boxes, so it's just moving boxes and furniture.

Most of the mover time is spent wrapping/unwrapping furniture, mirrors, tables, etc. So that's where the real time suck will be.

Ohhh, okay. I didn't know they did that, but it makes sense. We aren't selling our house anytime soon, so there is the benefit of moving random things over during the weeks leading to the move

Couldn't you have googled and read the other 300 threads started on this topic over the years?

Tipped a group of 5 movers $100 each at the end of the job.
It was a big job, moved out of state.

While unpacking found out they stole shite, people suck.

Yeah, prep over the course of several weeks will save you time and headache and in my opinion will make you feel far less stressed about the move. You'll know where stuff is, know it was packed well, etc.

We bought probably three dozen bankers boxes a month before and some giant bubble wrap rolls. Do a couple of boxes a night and and label them. Divide boxes up into things you'll bring (glassware, etc.) vs. stuff you'll let them take in the truck. We also rolled and taped art or other things we didn't want them taking. Can easily be handled in 15-20 minutes a night if you do it over the course of a month. I think the goal is to have a barren house and a wall of boxes on the morning of the move.

In the UK it’s not necessary, we all make a fair living wage. In the americas however, you all seem to do well for yourself but insist on being more and more money hungry and ask for a meaningless tip. Let’s be real mate, the last time I went to a corner shop in the states for a pack of parliaments the bird behind the counter had a tip bucket on the counter.

former mover, it is appreciated but not expected. It is the inverse of the restaurant industry. The nicer the house the less i expected a tip.

Brothers always at least gave us beer or water.

This was while at LSU. Typically moving people around BR or to various towns within an hour or two.

Did you prep? Or did they like pack all your belongings into boxes too? Just curious what I'm in for.

Pack the boxes, and label them. You don't dipshit movers to pack your boxes. For one it will take forever and cost a fortune but mainly because it will save you time when you unload if you have a good idea where everything is.

When i use movers, their life is pretty easy. Only things they are getting are big stuff and boxes. I want them in and out.

Also if possible have one person at the new house and one at the old. You need someone directing traffic both ways.

I do.

They finished over an hour faster than I thought they would, were polite, took care of everything, and asked where everything needed to go at the new place. Tipped what the last hour was worth ($100ish) in cash.

Last time I moved it was 3 guys. I gave them each 20 bucks and a beer. That was all I had to offer at the time.
