I'm not saying I agree, but I think you are looking at it the wrong way. It's not that someone wouldn't commit murder because of the fear of being executed publicly vs privately.

The thought is that it would make the harsh realities of executions apparent to everyone...and that would presumably force people to perhaps think before they kill. I guess the argument would be that, today, people really don't think about capital punishment. It's very removed from society.

It's not that. Its more of a thing for people to see. Like yes, if you murder someone we will kill you. If you're a big time drug dealer, we will kill you. (Just throwing crimes out there) I personally think it would deter some people from committing crimes.

Kinda like a real life anti crime advert.

Yes, already do support it but it will only work if it is violent like flogging or firing squad

No, research has shown that most criminals don't think about being caught, much less what the consequences are.

I willing to bet that the criminals being executed won't be committing any more crimes and I won't have to pay to keep them incarcerated.

While this may be true, I doubt the study shows how public executions work on the people.

The reason the crime rate continues to fall is because we are locking up criminals longer.

Just build more jails and warehouse them.

If executions by themselves wouldn't deter anyone, then why would it matter where the execution takes place?

We did something in Sociology class in the mid 90's and the death penalty was shown to be effective under certain conditions. None of which would work in this country.

The most important one was swiftness. If done quickly following conviction, it's shown to be a deterrent.

Someone being injected in a room where only a handful are there to see it is different than a public display.

maybe a little.

pain would be the only thing that would bring crime rate down.

that's why, in Singapore, you can leave your car running when going grocery shopping.

Death penalty as a deterrent only works if it's done quickly enough. It's impossible to do that with the abundance of laws we have in this country. There's an appeal for any amount of bull shite you can come up with.

They never did before. In 18th century England, pickpocketing was a capitol offense, and pickpockets worked the crowds at public executions.

I all but know that public executions would bring down the murder rate if they were gruesome enough.

Dumb criminals without role models learn by watching. They don't have anyone to scare them about the abstract possibility of a lethal injection after decades of appeals.

Seeing a crying 25 year old murderer's head turned into pink smoke would traumatize people. One of the side effects would be that it would give would be teenage killers a disturbing and visceral example of what could happen. It's a way to enforce long-term thinking, a quality criminals generally lack and are not taught.

You don't think there would have been more pickpockets if it were punishable by a lash instead? Executions can't deter everyone.

If I want to live in a society like that I'll move to the tribal areas of Pakistan.

I'm not necessarily advocating for it. Just answering the question. Would it deter better? I think the answer is obviously yes.
