re: Do you spend more dining out or on groceries?

We were in the habit of eating out way too much and it's hard to notice how much you spend swiping a check card. We recently switched to a set amount each week of cash for eating out and it has cut mine a lot. The main thing to do for an easy switch is planning ahead and a little food prep before bed.

We are trying really hard to eat out only 2-3 times a week. We used to eat out every night or at least 5 nights of the week with the occasional night of cooking or having leftovers from something we got earlier in the week. It only takes eating out 3 or so times to spend more than you would on a week of cooking, depending where you go to eat.

Coming is easier than bringing small kids a restaurant. So we cook a lot

lately I have been eating at home more than at a restaurant, but when I eat out I spend way more money. I eat noodles, beans, and chicken from the grocery store... A meal costs like 3 bucks with what I get... Restaurant dinner gets expensive, especially with beers.

True, but a lot of people tend to forget that you are also paying for the atmosphere, entertainment, and relaxation that comes with dining out.
Equating the dollar amounts of dining out and buying groceries is not fair and should be properly weighted.

don't forget they are also paying for dirty public restrooms, fight for parking spaces, give $$ for mediocre service.
I usually cook at home. Much better to improve a necessary skill and control what goes in my body.

At the same time, a recent survey showed that “Among those [making $75,000 or more] who are not saving as much as they believe they should because of spending on lifestyle purchases, 68 percent blamed dining out as the main reason. Among millennials (ages 18-34), 70 percent blamed dining out."
Describes me. I venture into a grocery store once every 3-4 months. I eat out 3 times a day and eat snacks 2-3 times a day - protein bars, fruits, nuts, all prepackaged except for apples and bananas.

Sorry that you only visit shitty restaurants.

we're probably 50/50 at our house.

100% on groceries, 0% on eating out. Cost too much to eat out, and food is shite at most convenient places.

My guess would be that the wife and I are somewhere between 60:40 and 70:30 in favor of groceries.
That includes beer and wine for the house though.

I wound up eating out on several occasions this summer and it amazes me how quickly those restaurant bills add up. I have never understood how college students are able to do that on a regular basis.
We try and find deals. BOGOs, cheap decent restaurants like El Paso, 225eats etc.

Drinking is what gets me at restaurants
Just this week I ate at the new Brazilian steakhouse in Lafayette and it was $32 for the meal. Well my ticket was $70 after my $25 bar tab before I sat down. So after tip I spent $120 and got $32 worth of food

I think I drink more at home or out tailgating than I do at restaurants... because I know how much shite is marked up, I tend to pace myself better.

Being a drunk, I prefer to get water and eat. Then hit my booze in the car on way home for same reason. One shot of well vodka costs what a fifth does of Walmart/Albertons vodka. frick that.

I eat more at home but end up spending more eating out

wine gets me too when eating with wife but it's part of the experience
probably would pass on eating out before doing it without drinking
