Totally unnecessary unless you have multiple acres to cut.

False. I have wealth. More than I need. My free time is still worth no more than another's.

What you meant to say was

"The more pretentious you are, the more you inflate the value of your time".

I'm basically in this situation but I push mow so it makes sense monetarily wise plus I enjoy it.

That’s my situation as well.

I have friend whose yard is the same size as mine and he has a zero turn. He is under the delusion that it makes it go by faster. My take is people are trying to keep up with the Smith’s.

In fact, many take pride in maintaining their own lawns and gardens. If someone else does it for you, its not your work to take pride in.

I made a point to note that in my post. People who enjoy lawn work and do it as a hobby use a different cost-benefit calculus. I build furniture as a hobby. It takes me roughly 80 hours to build a Maloof rocker and over 150 hours to build a Boston Bombe chest, I could buy the rocker for $4500 or the chest for $14000 from a boutique furniture craftsman. My time is worth much more to me than $60-90 dolllars an hour but I still do it because I love it and the sense of accomplishment that comes from complteing something very few people could even approach.

In no way shape or form is my time worth only the $50 per hour I pay for my lawnwork. It takes me 2 hours to do the entire lawn correctly and they charge me $100. Over 2 months that runs me $800. I can bill and extra 1.5 hours at work over that 2 months and net enough to pay for the work.

Outside of the enjoyment derived doing a task the more disposable income one has the more valuable their disposable time gets. Someone can also derive joy from being a miser, that works too.

I have a piece of property where my rifle range is about 40 acres are basically pasture. I Bush Hog it twice a year. I actually enjoy that, in that case I value my money less than my time because I am getting more out of it that just getting the grass cut. It is a zen thing, something I don't get from mowing a lawn with 100 trees and beds everywhere.

Mowing your own grass and washing your own car? Who are you people?

Umm, we do. We pay someone to do most of that. I’m also going to take my wife out for dinner and drinks tonight even though I could, gasp, cook my own dinner and make my own drinks at a fraction of the price.

Enjoy mowing your own lawns,

Agreed, but it's more common than not.

I assume a lot of folks are financing this equipment and actually think they're "saving money".

I pay someone to cut mine. I have a fairly large yard. They cut it for $70. It’s cheaper to pay them to do it than it would be to buy a riding mower to cut it myself.

Most of your street lost 4 grand trying to keep up and impress those Joneses.

I get this now by hiking, though yard work used to be my therapy.

Nature is more soothing to me in my older years.

It really isn't smart, when you look at the numbers.

Yes. Same crew does pretty much our entire street on the same day.

It is your off time. Your free time. Yes, yes it is worth only $50/hour. Actually since you get paid $0/hour for your free time, $50/hour is quite inflated

But I am just here being obtuse.

Money aside, I think a push mower gives a cleaner cut plus it takes up far less space. Also good for some exercise.

Mine isn't a true push mower though, I have a Honda self propelled 21inch. Have thought about getting one of those Toros with the larger deck but I'd probably regret moving from the Honda.

$50 a week. It usually takes 3 hours to do mine. It’s too hot and I don’t have time for that shite.
