Chemically speaking the fight or flight mechanism is triggered by a bear jumping out from behind a bush or your co-worker asking you what is your damn problem. When triggered the fight or flight emotional response floods blood away from your brain and to your extremities so you can fight or flee more aggressively. The result is that your IQ lowers by 25%. When you hate someone and come into their presence it triggers fight or flight emotions, which is why you will often say things that sound stupid when verbally attacked. It usually starts off with "oh yeah, well..." and then lands with a thud.
