My wife and I are looking for a house to renovate in NOLA right now. For example, we looked at a termite ridden, complete reno project of around 2200 sq ft in Bayou St. John neighborhood. No back or front yard to speak of. Asking price was $300k. It ended up with 10+ bids in a matter of a week and it went for WAY over list.
Even houses in transitional neighborhoods that are gut jobs are going for no less than $150k. You can buy a brand new 2000 sq ft house for that on the northshore with as much yard as you want.
On the flip side you can buy nice houses in Gentilly, N.O. East even Holy Cross for $150k all day.
In NOLA you pay for lot and location exclusively. The structure on it is almost an afterthought unless its a renovated mansion.

It's not rich though. You need to be in a good career, or in a dual income household, but it's not terrible to swing.
