A guy I work with lives at the casino and brags about his winnings some Monday mornings. I never hear about how much he loses though.

Yes...a friend. In my opinion it cost him his career and probably more.

Does the stock market count?

Gambling is probably the most destructive addiction I've seen and I deal with that stuff daily.

More than alcohol? That surprises me but as an attorney, you do have a unique perspective

There's a big gray area of people who may have a drinking problem but are still functioning for the most part. It seems like most compulsive gamblers are completely out of control.

People can be functioning alcoholics for decades.
Compulsive gamblers can destroy the lives of themselves and their family in a weekend (I seent it).

I got the bright idea a few years ago to corner SEO for gambling markers. The stories I was told. 3, 4, 500 thousand in the hole over a weekend. I got out because people who lose all their money gambling can't really pay for an attorney

I had some buddies who wanted to bet on anything and everything. One hates Bama and wanted to bet that LSU would score in the second half of the championship game because he was going to lose big on LSU winning the NC that year. Then was basically crying during the Bama - Notre Dame NC. Dude's an Auburn fan and that invested in two teams he doesn't cheer for. Just sad.
We aren't buddies anymore. I don't associate with such self-destructive behavior.

In his defense those 2 bets seemed like pretty good bets at the time. Yes he lost big but hindsight bias is kicking in he could have easily hit those two.

It seems like even solid bets usually don't pan out for someone in the spiral.

There's no defense. Gambling isn't an investment.
ETA: I would also argue that no one who follows football should have seriously entertained the idea that Notre Dame was going to beat Bama.

One of my son’s roommates at LSU developed a serious gambling problem right after turning 21. Ran up debts into the 5-figure range, got booted from their apartment for non-payment, etc. After he was out of the apartment he’d still call each of his old roommates with crazy stories looking for money… “I’m in another state and my car broke down, can you send me money?” The kid drove a really nice car and came from money, but I think his dad ended up cutting him off. At times he'd win $10k+ on an all nighter at the casino, but more often he'd lose thousands. Always talked up his winnings to make it look like he had it under control.

Lady i used to work with would go hit the video poker machines every day on her lunch break. Then would come back to work and eat her untouched food on the clock.

Worked with a guy that would go to the casino all the time. He made good money but would have to hit the payday loan places to keep afloat. I can’t imagine living that way.
