I started running a few miles after work 5 days a week and it really helps. Start extending your mileage gradually. The longer you run without stopping, the more tired your body will be. Your body will crave sleep.
I used to not be about to go to sleep without taking some form of sleep aid but now I don't have any problems.

Running is too boring for me. Insanity whips my butt sufficiently.
ETA: I've never really had a problem falling asleep, but strenuous exercise puts me down.
ETA2: Also, I put on a TV show that I've seen a million times and I'm out within 5 minutes. My go-to is Archer.

Books on tape
They're only 30 minutes long, self-contained, and listening in the dark provides the perfect creepy atmosphere...

Cardio and melatonin works for me
This works for me as well.
And, like others said, TV, phones, iPads, etc will keep you awake regardless of what you take. I realized that when i first started taking melatonin and would stay on my iPad til 230am. Then i would take melatonin after I worked out, only use iPad to check emails and set up schedule, then would turn it all off. I was asleep in 20minutes.

jogging a few miles a day can't hurt.
or even walking, if you don't feel like running.
I lift weights 3 times a week and usually don't have as much trouble falling asleep those days.
but sometimes on days where I just go jogging, I can't fall asleep the same.
still wound up I guess.

3. Cardio. And lots of it. Whenever I go for a run right after work, by the time I shower and finish eating dinner, I’m exhausted.
This...
Try working out after work (closer to bed time). Get a good sweat in and shower before bed. It should knock you out.

Takes me about 2-3 minutes to fall asleep when I'm in bed.
Sometimes, not even that.

Not too close to bedtime or your heartrate will still be up and you will have a hard time falling asleep. Sometimes we stay late rolling in our BJJ classes and I come home all amped up and can't fall asleep. I need a few hours after hard cardio to really cool down, but then like you said, down for the count.

I used to deal with this. Turns out I have some serious anxiety issues. I take 22.5 of Remeron and it helps tremendously. I tried exercising, not exercising, meditation, yoga, tylenol PM...you name, I tried it. Remeron is the only thing that works for me. Not sleeping sucks arse. Good luck.

I usually play on my phone laying in bed. And definitely don't do this. Read a book.

Thanks. Still debating whether or not to buy a Kindle. I can normally find the books I want under the Amazon used section for less than 5 (shipping included).

I use the kindle app on my iPad and I love it. I read a lot and would start getting anxious when I was near the end of the book and didn't have at least 3 at home to choose from.
