Mine is not very strong typically, but I can also play it up or down depending on the company. Being from AP, my accent wasn’t that strong to begin with, but it definitely gets thicker when drinking with my friends I grew up with (told I sound like a black coonass, which checks out considering my rural public school upbringing) When I go up north, though, no one guesses I’m from the South (granted, I learned as a kid that it’s best to dial that drawl waaaay back up there). They usually assume New York area, eastern Penn, or Illinois.

So I've been told from multiple people. I usually lay it on pretty thick when we go visit my wife's family in Michigan, they can't understand half of what I say lol!!!

I called a liquor store up a few years ago, and asked them "what time ya'll close" after about 4 times I said "What time do you close" they said 8p LOL! Wife still enjoys telling that story.

people outside the country ask if im from texas.

I had a woman from Boston on the phone the other day say, "you must be from Texas, you sound like a country boy"
I'm from Greene County, AL and live in Memphis now. Is Texas just a go to for people from outside of the south? I don't really think of people from Texas when I think of a Southern accent

Our waitress in Atlanta this weekend asked us were we were from because she loved our accent. Is Atlanta not in the south anymore?

Our accents are in the ear of the beholder. We get our accents mostly from parents, peers, region we’re from. If you stay pretty close to where you were born and raised, you’re not going to notice anybody’s accents around you very much. If your parents came from elsewhere, their accents will be different than most around you, and you are likely to pick some of that up.

I have the Brooklyn sounding New Orleans accent.

Like nails on a chalk board. One of the worst accents around.

I just can't stand it. It reeks of ignorance and low brow trashiness.

That's a strange question from someone in Atlanta, since they should be used to folks from outside the city coming in.

However, I've noticed that most people under 35 or so that grew up in a metro area, even in the Deep South, tend to have a standard American accent. Blows my mind. My girlfriend is from outside of Austin and she sounds like she could be from any major city.

I don't feel like I have much of one, but it usually only takes people a few minutes to ask me where I'm from whenever I meet them, so I guess I do.

When I lived in western NC, I still had people ask, "where the hell are you from?" You know it's bad when hillbillies are astonished.
