Do you give a two week notice or just walk out?

I've always wondered why giving an employer a 2 week notice became a thing. That same employer more often than not would lay you off with no notice whatsoever. I get the whole not burning bridges thing but why is it wrong to leave for more money without notice when the same employer would cut you without notice to save money? In the industry I work in more often than not an employer will send you packing when you give your notice. People still do it, though.
I've never walked out on a job but it I got to thinking about this over my morning coffee. Do you baws give a notice?

They must not manage their employee's workflow very well if they can just unexpectedly lose somebody and not suffer a drop in productivity.

I get that. It's a courtesy to a company that would not return the same courtesy to you.

Feel free to walk out if you want a negative reference as it pertains to future jobs

Never ever burn a bridge when it comes down to work. One never knows what the future has installed. Best to give the notice.

I think he's saying it from perspective that the company isn't courteous so why should he be.
To answer question, no I haven't walked out on a job. But there have been a couple I didn't like

Industrial Contractors do it all the time. They can usually have the person replaced in a couple of days.

last time I gave 2 weeks notice, my employer told me to go ahead and pack my office the next day
I started my new job 2 days later
It was nice getting 2 checks for those 2 weeks

I never really hear of layoffs without some sort of severance of advance notice. If they just tell you one day you don't have a job that's shitty, but you work for people too not just a company. Why end things badly if there's no animous?

It depends if I want to leave on good terms and what a reference or not.
As a professional, I would give a notice.

That depends. Do you have even an ounce of integrity or not?
