If it is just one of my friends in general, I usually buy them dinner or a couple drinks if we go out.

Family is turning into useful gift cards more and more each year. I got my parents a few hundred in gift certificate to a restaurant they really like and then got them a smaller gift each. My sister/brother in law is a few bottles of wine and gift cards for the nephews to the movies/gamestop.

I don't deal with kids unless they are being born. I got one buddy a baby proofing kit for his first son's birth. It was useful and needed.

The one gift that is always used and appreciated. ........cash. People say it’s unthoughtful but it never goes unused.

I learned not to buy Apple TV for anyone over the age of 50. Got one set up at my in-laws last year, programmed in all their account passwords (they have Hulu and Netflix). To this day they still sit in bed watching TV on their iPads.

Also got one for the wife’s grandparents not knowing they have satellite internet that gets like 5 Mbps, max. Oh well.

I don't get "pissed off".

But my dad and grandpaw are both really hard to buy for (they just get whatever they want throughout the year), so when I feel like I finally found a cool gift they don't already have and should like, I feel really accomplished. Then I find it in the back of a cabinet somewhere years later, unopened. It's usually because it's something they don't know how to use, or they are intimidated by the technology or something. It's just annoying because it'll be something I know they could really enjoy if they just attempted to learn how to use it. So that can be frustrating
