I had a roommate in college who I was really good friends with, and I ended up being the Best Man in his wedding. They were married for about 6-7 years, had a 1 year old daughter, when he got busted for kiddie porn. Says it was only possession, not distribution or creation, and that's all he was ever charged with was possession.

I loved him like a brother. He was a little weird, but aren't we all, and I had absolutely no idea he was into that kind of stuff. Having daughters of my own, it completely devastated me and a bunch of our friends as well.

One morning, FBI showed up before work to raid his house. From that moment on, he completely dissappeared from our friend group. His wife and daughter immediately moved out, and they still keep in touch with us a bit, but in her need to completely disassociate herself and her daughter with him and his life, we are all kind of out of the circle. He completely avoided us, including us going to his house on multiple occasions to talk to him, and eventually he pled guilty and is currently in jail.

No, you never real know if someone has a hidden dark side. I had a high school friend that was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated incest. Blew my fricking mind.

no, you don't really "know" people you don't know and barely interact with

I have a similar story. My best friend through junior and high school got a baseball scholarship, and was an above average player. He got into some trouble with the college and ended up transferring. He was one semester from graduating when he dropped out. He had gotten a stripper pregnant and was at least legit attempting to work and help her out. We lost touch for about a year. I was watching the news one night and saw that he had been arrested. Home invasion of an elderly couple, kidnapping, armed robbery, and a list of other charges. He took a plea deal and got 75 years in prison.

Or they just ignored the signs, like in most cases.

Turns out my wife's (no pics) great-grandfather was a Nazi SS officer executed by the Soviets for war crimes, so there is that....

....makes me wonder if genocide runs in her family.

At least none of my kids have thrown a hamster into the microwave or anything yet.

EDIT: I forgot about this one. My father-in-law used to work with this guy. Even carpooled with him a few times.

I shook hands at a Gator Walk multiple times with Aaron Hernandez. Could have been the end for me.

People don't make the effort to go around investigating those close to them to see if they are child predators or future murderers. However, child predators and future murders make the effort to convince those around them that they are not those things.

If you knew the uncle, you'd understand. The whole family does it and we all are Christians. Uncle thinks of himself as a prophet of God. . . and does a LOT of things contrary to the Bible.

We had a family tragedy a few years ago. Cousin inlaw murdered his kids and committed suicide. He was the guy that was the easiest to talk to around holidays. We always sat on the back patio to avoid being cornered by our Bible beating uncle. Was on the road to being an ER surgeon. Never suspected he'd one day take the path he did.

Sounds to me like he could have used a little advice from said uncle.
