Might be good to put money in the poor box at church. Then volunteer so you can see how they spend it.

I've done that and fund raised as a St. Jude Hero to participate in the St. Jude Memphis Marathon weekend the past 2 years.

I don't necessarily regularly give to them, but my amazon smile account is set up to send money to them. I also will give them a few dollars when I see the opportunity somewhere. I'm generally pretty suspicious of a lot of charities, but they are one that I feel comfortable giving money to.

St. Jude's is a great charity, as is the Shriners and Salvation Army. I give to all three.
