Not sure but don't really care because it is a kick arse fun vacation spot that is all I know!
It IS pretty cool. Spent a few days there last week because my son and his fiance decided to have their wedding there.
Probably would have never gone otherwise, but enjoyed it. Apparently they considered declaring themselves a republic in the 80's or something in response to some drug law Florida passed. And they were only mostly joking.

New Orleans is often referred to as the northernmost Caribbean city.

I’ve been to KW and I’ve been to multiple spots in the Caribbean. I do not consider KW the Caribbean.

Compared to actual islands in the Caribbean sea, the Keys are little rocky turd islands.

Florida Bay, immediately north of the Keys, is so shallow you could almost walk to the Everglades.
To the south, after the reefs, comes the very deep water Florida Channel through which the Gulf Stream flows.
Florida is a flat lying carbonate complex, Cuba is a complex Island with impressive mountains and an even more impressive trench to the south.
Florida is like the bahamas in flatness and age.
Cuba is more like the other islands with have either volcanoes giving them height, or geological activity pushing the rocks upward.
I'd draw a line along the Gulf Stream, just geologically based because of the differences.

“Rocky turds”
Not completely inaccurate, but that is a good thing. Imagine how glammed up and touristy it would be with miles of great beach.

A friend of mine believes that Key West is part of the Caribbean.
With that logic, Houston would be Mexico….. maybe your stupid friend is on to something.
